Pythons are nonvenomous.

Name says 'The Viper', vipers(rattlesnakes come under this I think) are poisonous, but pythons are similar to boas and like you said are non poisonous and kill by strangulation. This picture seems to be of a Python/Boa rather than a Viper, no? Vipers have some kind of heat pit under their nose I believe(not sure though)

Venomous. It's venomous. Venom is injected. Poison is consumed.

..The artist comments right below says that it's a carpet python, which makes me groan and face palm when they title the image as 'viper'. Snakes have enough of a bad rep without people misidentifying them. Additionally, heat pits aren't limited to vipers. Boas and pythons have them as well.

A mistake on my part... Sorry. Again thanks for the info. I always thought that vipers were triangle headed snakes with pits. Assumed only they had pits. Of course I assumed wrong about the pits being unique to them as many pointed out.

Totally with you on the title being misleading. I took one look at the pic and was like "...that's not a viper!"

That aside, the picture is absolutely gorgeous.

The title 'The Viper' is just that, a title. It's actually a Jungle Python so yes, a constrictor just like boas.

On a side note, elapids (including vipers) are venomous and not poisonous; A very common mistake. Morelia pythons (and a couple other species) also have heat pits too, but they are located on the lower jaw at the corner of their mouth.

.... Wait... Did you mean that they have neuro-toxic venom and that they non poisonous(in relation to food)? If that is what you mean then ya... that was a typo... My bad.

"elapids (including vipers) are venomous and not poisonous". Huh? How can they be venomous and not poisonous. I fail to understand.

Did not know about pythons having heat pits... Thanks for the info...

Ball pythons have pit organs and they are also located at the upper portion of the mouth. In the case of an actual venomous snake, the venom is modified saliva and is injected via hollow or grooved fangs. Elapidae have fangs fixed in place (King Cobra), most often, unlike a viper (Viperidae) which are most often viewed when seeing a snake that has mobile fangs (Diamondback Rattlesnake).

Makes sense. Cobras do have tiny fangs and vipers longer fangs. Thanks for the info.

Ok, I ment that instead of having a poison they have venom. Strictly speaking, venom is injected via fangs (hollow teeth used for transferring venom from the sacks into the prey.) But like with all things there are expetions to the rules; In Africa there is a tree with venom in it's spines.

(I'm going to reply to your other post here too.)
There are a number of venom's that effect different parts of the body. Yes there are the ones that are neuro-toxic but there are also necrotic and sometimes a mixture of both.
(I'm sure there are others but I've only just woken up. I'm sure I've missed something out =S )

This is just my understanding from what I've learnt hopefully someone with more knowledge will pop in.

Also there is haemotoxic venom. Saw a documentary where a doc put a drop of venom into a beaker of blood and within some time it became like jelly.

What an absolutely exquisite creature. I'd be frightened to ever randomly run into a snake of course, and sometimes they're even scary when they're "domestic" pets, but no matter what you can't deny that is a lesson in beauty... such gorgeous colors.
