A Friendly Chat

Derek strolled through the halls of Caduceus before his eyes fell upon the person he wanted to talk to. There, laying on the hospital bed was Richard Anderson, the man who had contracted Pempti, the newest strain that Delphi had released…and Derek was keen on talking to the man while he was still alive. Pempti had taken a long while to create and it would be such a shame for it to be defeated so easily by Caduceus. Tetarti had been a struggle too with the different toxins coursing through the three different bodies but Pempti…with its ability of attacking the nervous system through the infected organ, along with its ability to create smaller tumours to go on offensive if threatened.

He watched over Richard; his body was certainly getting weaker as the Pempti continued to damage it but already he could tell that Richard wasn’t taking anything to numb the pain…why? He tilted his head before he heard a familiar voice whisper to him.

“I wasn’t expecting you to arrive…” Pempti whispered.

“I came to see how you were handling your first host. It’s a pity Caduceus found you so soon…” Derek spoke softly and quietly; he couldn’t afford to let others know about his connection to GUILT or that he was one of the reasons why it was around in the first place. He wasn’t in his Delphi uniform and instead in a simple baby blue shirt and jeans.

“I’m doing the best I can…but their leading researcher will find me out soon enough…” Pempti hissed.

“So, our next bet would be to take out their little researcher…” Derek commented as he put a finger on his chin, seemed like an easy target but at the same time he felt his interest starting to awaken. Someone being able to figure out GUILT this quickly was a danger. The surgeon still needed to skills or speed to handle some of the strains but someone who knew how to create a toxin for GUILT would need to be removed, and quickly.

“You should leave, he is waking.”

“Thank you.”

Pempti was right. Richard started to come around, groaning as he moved his body and the pain that must have flared through his system. Why wasn’t he taking anything to mask the pain signals? Derek wanted to know but was he ready for his presence to be known? He wasn’t exactly hiding but none of the staff here seemed to notice him either as he slipped through the hospital to reach the private ward. He looked down at his hand…maybe it was the bliss that was coursing through his system? Maybe it was making him give off pheromones to make people unaware of him? He pushed those thoughts behind him as he approached Richard.

“Who…are you…?” Richard asked weakly. He still managed to push himself up into a sitting position and got a good look at Derek. A friendly smile appeared on his face as Derek approached closer. He must have already known that Derek wasn’t a reporter or anyone from the media and may just need a friendly person to talk to. Derek himself didn’t know much about Richard apart from that he was a person in power and director of Caduceus…getting rid of him was a must. Derek was the assassin who used GUILT as his weapon and Richard was someone standing in his way…the target Delphi wanted to remove. Derek needed to play this cool…he put on a dumb smile on his face.

“Ah, sorry if I disturbed you, I…just needed to stop sitting in the waiting room and needed to talk to someone,” he lied.

“Who’s infected? If you don’t mind me asking?” Richard asked as he gently rested his back against the wall. Derek blinked before Richard pointed towards a visitor’s chair. “Please, take a seat.”

“Thank you,” Derek responded as he strolled towards the chair and gently sat down, he couldn’t afford to get comfortable in enemy territory. “My sister…I promised to look after her yet she became infected with…this disease everyone’s starting to become infected with…GUILT? I think?” He spoke calmly.

“It’s terrible…this disease needs to be stopped…and the organisation creating it needs to be found and stopped…many innocent people are becoming infected…”

“Are we all truly innocent though? I mean…we’ve probably all stolen something sometime in our lives. My dad scolded me well when I stole a cookie out the cookie jar~”

“Father caught you doing that?” Pempti asked.

“How old were you when you did that?” Richard asked him as he chuckled slightly.

“About seven?” Derek wanted to respond to Pempti but he couldn’t…not with Richard being awake. “And I did know stealing was wrong but…it was a chocolate chip cookie…begging to be eaten.”

“I can see why the temptation got to you. How old is your sister?”

“She’s only 15 years old…still too young to die though…” Derek looked down at the floor. This was all lies but Richard didn’t need to know that. “Mind I ask what you’re infected with?”

“You know that I’ve infected~” Pempti exclaimed out of happiness. A tiny smile made its way on Derek’s face as he heard how happy Pempti was. He hid it quickly as Richard let out a sigh, he could see the conflict in his eyes if he should tell Derek or not about what he had. Even if Richard didn’t, he already knew and it was making itself well known to him as it spoke in the conversation. Derek just hoped that it would figure out that he couldn’t answer back. Pempti wasn’t dumb so he assumed it knew.

“A new strain of GUILT…”

“A new strain? So they have to find a way to combat it…”

“Yes…and there’s a part of me that knows I’m not going to make it. This is all too painful to handle now and…” he paused as he started to cough. Pempti had made its home in his right lung, spreading its fluid around and stealing the oxygen he inhaled. No matter how hard his lungs tried to expel the fluid, Pempti’s sac prevented any from leaving. “I have to…endure this…for Caduceus…”

“For Caduceus?” Derek asked.

“I’m the first…with this strain…I want to do…everything I can to…help them…”

“You’re willing to go through so much pain that this strain is causing…so Caduceus has raw data?”

“Yes…This is the only…way I can help Caduceus then…so be it.”

“I really like him…I want him so badly to be my first victim. Hey…can I try something?” Pempti asked.

“What…?” He asked.

“I was just wondering if I could try and infect the other lung?” Pempti questioned Derek.

“Well, I don’t know…much about medicine…but if I can…be useful with this strain…”

“How…? How can you do that?”

“I send three different cores out and encase them with the fluid and force them through the bronchus and into the left lung?”

“They’ll find a treatment…by treating me,” Richard smiled at Derek. “Then no one…will have to suffer like…I am now…”

“And if you died doing that?” Derek asked with his fingers slowly curling into a fist.

Memories flashed though his mind when he was in one of the hospital beds, his body all wired up with multiple drips along with a heart-rate monitor. Whenever he moved his body he could already feel the pain…it was painful to breath, sleep, eat, drink and go to the toiler. He had given up hope while his disease was destroying his body. The doctors had given up on him and even his mother had stopped visiting him, claiming that it had been too painful to see her child suffer…Derek couldn’t blame her, she would have done through it twice. Once with his father…and once with him. He had said yes to every experimental treatment possible and every specialist but…he couldn’t be saved. Then Delphi had appeared, offered him their hand and said they wouldn’t stop until he was either dead or alive. They had offered him hope…they had created the bliss that coursed through his body…it had saved him. It had worked yet he didn’t know how, nor wanted to know. After giving him back his life…he worked hard for them in return.

“Then so be it…”

“Pempti…don’t bother experimenting…do your job,” Derek spoke in a stern voice.

“Yes Derek,” Pempti purred.

“What…? How did…you kn-!” Richard’s voice was cut off as the Pempti in his body started to attack. The alarms started to ring letting Derek know that it was time to leave. Pempti wouldn’t let him survive much longer and it reduced the time Caduceus had to find a cure for this monster of a parasite.

“Director Anderson!” Angie yelled as she ran into the room and pushed Derek to the side. “Sorry!” She apologised as she glanced at Derek but he didn’t care. He was leaving.

“H…h…h…e…” Richard tried to talk as he raised his hand to point at Derek but Angie had placed the oxygen mask over his mouth. His consciousness fell to darkness quickly.

“Breath deeply, you’re rapidly losing oxygen! I NEED HELP!” Angie yelled as the doctors started to arrive.

“Goodbye, Richard Anderson,” Derek spoke as he glanced back at Richard as he was swiftly rushed into theatre for an emergency operation.
