Chapter 10"Can...You tell me more about Heaven's War?" Misaki asked the Black Reaper once he had settled down the rampaging emotions. He looked at Misaki and shook his head. It wasn't his story to tell.
"I can't but...I'm worried about Li."
"You're worried about Li?"
"Amber, I and Bai are."
"You talk like you know where she is."
"I do, but Li's not ready to know yet. The time isn't right."
"Then...what are you worried about?"
"During Heavens War...when Li was fighting to protect Bai...he started off okay but something changed. I've finally found out what's causing this and it isn't me resonating with Hell's Gate, its Li. He's resonating with the gate." Misaki's eyes widened. This was the first time she was hearing any of this but now it made sense why keeping Li away from other contractors was a good idea. It wasn't because of the contractor side fighting for dominance; it was something else that BK-201 was hopefully going to explain. "While fighting during Heaven's War no one noticed anything, just he was adjusting to killing but he still felt guilty. Amber and Bai could see that he didn't want to do what he's been trained to but whenever they confronted Li about it, he lied and held in the pain he was feeling. They gave up and formed their own plan on sending Heaven's Gate into an alternative dimension so that the Syndicate couldn't destroy it and cause contractor genocide. That's what the EPR is for, the protection of the gates. Both Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate need to be protected in order for contractors to live without fear of their existence being wiped out. I don't agree with the method they use but that's not the point. Heaven's War took place inside Heaven's Gate...members of PANDORA who entered Hell's Gate came back insane or they died within the gate. But for Li the story is different. Being in the gate was slowly stripping him of his own human nature. After Bai and Amber's plan worked and I came to Li...His cells were already changing. Changing from human to something else, not contractor cells like Bai's were when I came."
"So you think that Heaven's Gate changed his cells...while he was fighting inside the gate?" Misaki asked; she could see November 11 and April in the distance standing still, overhearing the conversation between herself and BK-201.
"Heaven's Gate mutated his cells but the Syndicate didn't know about it. Li didn't know about it, only I did but I don't have a method of communicating to Li. Don't tell him this...but Bai's soul fused with his, that's how he became a contractor, that's how I'm here and Li doesn't have a payment to pay."
"I always wondered about that...but Li's constantly hungry?"
"That's a defective gene in his body, not contractor payment."
"Sorry..."
"It was a valid link...but linked incorrectly."
"Continue?"
"Right, the Syndicate made another stupid move...and sent Li into Hell's Gate. That's when things went from okay, to worse. When he went to PANDORA, he met another contractor named Nick. He was a nice guy, wanted to save his little sister just like Li wants and they shared the same interest in the stars. Nick had control over electricity while Li used electricity himself but then the fight got serious. Nick had a gun and Li was defenceless. The Meteor Shard that they were fighting over became active and protected in image of Bai out in her battle uniform. Naturally, he went out to see her but it was an illusion that the Meteor shard projected...I'm not sure what happened after that but Li had more mutated cells in him. Because of Hell's Gate...his 'sanity' has been decreasing ever since. It's gotten to the point where Li's starting to hear this melody when he starts resonating with the gate. That's the drive that wants him to return."
"Why isn't it bothering you?"
"Maybe because I'm a contractor while Li's a human. If this was an alternative timeline...and Li and Bai were contractors, Bai with me and Li with another contractor...I'm pretty sure then he'll be the worst contractor alive, not me."
"What makes you think that?"
"It's just a feeling...but if Li was a contractor then his ability would be wire manipulation and his payment would be cannibalism."
"Why are you telling me this?" Misaki asked.
"Because Amber trusted you enough to send you to Li when he needs help, Li may hate Amber but I don't. That might be because I know more than what Li does. I hope Amber understand that Li isn't going to forgive her until he finds out the truth himself. Guess what Amber offered you isn't really needed anymore, right?"
More than Just a Contractor – Chapter 10
Wei ran through the corridors with Huang, Mao and Yin following. The Syndicate wasn't going to be happy with both Hei and his team gone rogue. Huang was holding onto Yin while they were running but thanks for her running with Hei, she was pretty quick on her feet. Wei sliced open his wrist and flicked it at the oncoming guards. With another click from his fingers, the guards fell and the small group continued. Amagiri had taken care of a lot of members so that issue wasn't the main issue. The main issue was getting out of the Syndicate alive. They may have been contractors but there was still the chance that they could die by a guard or each other if they weren't careful. Amber also needed to be found and all the members of the EPR to regroup so they could work on handling the other situation going around.
"Where's Hei now?" Wei asked the group.
"He's with Officer Kirihara. Don't know where..." Yin replied. Wei nodded.
"Why's Hei reacting to the gate?"
"Amber has her theory...but it'll be better if we let her do the talking."
"Right," Mao commented as they turned the corner.
"About time Wei," Amagiri had been waiting for them.
"I'm sorry, we had a little talk." Wei smiled and shrugged.
"Wei, make us an escape route, Amber's waiting for us back in the base." Wei did what he was told. If Amber was waiting for them then it was better not to keep her waiting like they were doing at the moment. She was still waiting for Hei to come back to her while everyone else knew that he wasn't going to come to her. Not after what had happened between the two of them.
An escape route was made quickly using Wei's contractor ability and Amagiri's ability helped keep the guards away and defended the team. Running through the tunnel that was found under the Syndicate, they were getting closer to Amber and what she believed was going on. There was the chance that Amber herself could be wrong. The future wasn't set in stone and Hei had often changed the future she observed just be being himself. It wasn't long before Wei stopped in front of what appeared to be a distortion. In front of the group was a large black orb with electricity coming out from the edges of the sphere.
"What's that?" Huang asked.
"That's how we got in, it's safe. It'll lead us straight back to Amber." Wei looked behind at Huang and walked through. Yin was the first to follow Wei, followed by Mao, Huang and Amagiri. Once all of them had escaped through the distortion, it vanished and the group arrived at the EPR base, Amber waiting with a smile on her face.
"Welcome. I'll explain what's going on in the morning, you all look tired and in need of paying contracts."
More than Just a Contractor – Chapter 10
November 11 had decided to fall back, the past feeling had faded with the help of the new information that he had overheard from what Misaki and the Black Reaper were talking about. He felt a little stupid feeling the emotion that he felt before. It wasn't needed. Misaki was clearly more worried about Li than anything else at the current time. It was half understandable but it still irritated November 11 to no end. April remained watching, keeping her distance so that her 'aura' wouldn't bother or stir anything in BK-201 which could threaten Misaki.
"Hey One one, what's the point in sulking?" She asked with a smirk on her face. November 11 half glared at her but sighed.
"Do you ever think we're more than just what we're labelled as?"
"What gave you that idea?"
"Just...the way that Mr. BK-201 talks...He's a real special case but with that divided personality. Being both human and contractor...Do you ever think it's possible for contractors like us to be human yet still be a contractor?" November 11 asked, looking up at the night sky.
"It is possible. Since meeting BK-201 on the battle field and having conversations like this, I think it's possible for us to still have some of our human personality. Even if it's just a tiny part, it's better than not having anything human, right?"
"July, see if you can find any contractor headed this way, please?" November 11 asked. July nodded as April handed him an empty glass bottle of alcohol. April always managed to bring some form of alcohol with her, no matter how well November 11 frisked her to see if she had any. July sent his spectre out and did what he was told.
More than Just a Contractor – Chapter 10
"Why don't you return to Hell's Gate?" Li heard a voice behind him. Spinning around he saw himself like he was back in Heaven's War. He became the worst creature that fought in the war, a human who was worse than Carmine.
"I don't have a reason to return to the gate." Li responded.
"Yes you do. Xing's there. She's at the gate, waiting for you to come and find her. Isn't that what you wish for?"
"She's...not there."
"How do you know? I don't think you know what's really going on here~"
"And you do?"
"Naturally~"
"I hear a melody sometimes...is that you?"
"No, that's Hell's Gate's doing." It wasn't long before the melody started to play again. The drive to return to Hell's Gate had returned and Li couldn't ignore it.
More than Just a Contractor – Chapter 10
"Officer Kirihara, wake up." April gently shook Misaki awake. The police woman slowly opened her eyes and looked up to April's eyes. She gently sat up straight and rubbed the sleep from her eyes.
"April...?" Misaki asked confused.
"You fell asleep."
"Where's Li?" She looked around quickly to see that it was her, April and July.
"One one went after BK-201. I've been trying to wake you up for a while but this is the first time I've managed to do so." April told Misaki.
"What?" Misaki exclaimed as she jumped up onto her feet and frantically looked around trying to find where the two contractors had gone.
"BK-201's reaching the gate..." July said.
"Right," Misaki said as she ran off. April held July's hand and she followed Misaki.
November 11 grabbed a water bottle and unscrewed the top off. A handy tip from April saying that he should bring his own portable water source and it will come in handy. These were one of the times when the portable water was going to come in handy. BK-201 wasn't using his ability so he was just running down the street with November 11 following him. November 11 needed to get him away from people but also get him away from the gate. Misaki was going to hate him for this but it needed to be done. Flicking water out from the water bottle, November 11 used his power to create ice spikes. Predicting where BK-201 was going to be, he threw the ice spears at the contractor. It didn't take long before BK-201 brought out his double bladed weapon and struck the ice spears coming his way, shards of ice scattered from the impact. November 11 was expecting that movement and sent more down BK-201's path. It may be pointless to fight like this but he was buying time for Misaki and April to arrive. When they arrived to the battle, then November 11 and April will evolve this battle into the next phase and he could try and catch BK-201 in ice.
"I can't let you get to the gate, Mr. BK-201," November 11 smiled as he heard Misaki, April and July coming. April quickly called upon her contractor power and summoned up a storm. Rain poured down from the sky with November 11 moving quickly. Freezing the rain, it travelled up the falling rain and trapping BK-201 into an ice prison. November 11 continued to increase the walls of ice to stop BK-201 from escaping from the ice prison. There wasn't any way he was going to let BK-201 escape from this. Not since there was a lot going on at the time. Misaki and April watched as November 11 worked hard to keep the Black Reaper in. "Why didn't we do this before?" November 11 asked April. She simply shrugged while keeping her power going, just like November 11 was doing with the ice. The ice prison got thicker and thicker trapping BK-201 inside, they watched him try and break free from the ice prison but slowly he was falling to the cold temperature. Misaki watched with sad eyes.
"We will save you Li."
More than Just a Contractor – Chapter 10
Mao was the first to awaken. He could hear Amber and another member of the EPR talking. Amber was showing her concerns for Hei to her team but she didn't explain what was going on. Hitashi had said that Hei and the gate were resonating with each other but that was it. Amber was the type of contractor who knew more about what was going on so getting information from her was going to be beneficial to Mao and the others. Amber wanted them as well and she was going to let them know what they needed to do soon. Mao's ears twitched as he picked up someone else walking towards the other two members of the EPR.
"BK-201 has been captured."
"They won't kill him, more getting him dormant," Mao heard Amber's voice. Guessing by those words, Mao could only think that November 11 was somehow involved with what was going on.
"Dormant? Encased in Ice and waiting for him to sleep is what you call dormant?"
"If it stops him getting to the Gate while keeping him alive then yes, I'm okay with it."
"Won't that mean we'll have to break him out?"
"No, his star will turn red and the ice won't hold him forever."
"You're waiting for a resonance before we take action?"
"Yes."
"Isn't that dangerous?"
"I'll take a peek into the future to see, just to make sure." The conversation was dropped. Mao decided to stop listening in. If Amber was going to look into the future then he didn't want to know. Knowing the future was dangerous knowledge and it often altered the way you behaved and if you saw your own death, then you would alter what you do to try and avoid it. You'll just get paranoid and it'll completely change your life. More than their lives had already changed since the gates appeared.
"Hei...hang in there." Mao sighed as he walked over to Yin and curled up next to her. He had seen a side of Huang that he didn't think was possible; it was because of him that they were where they were now. They were now with Amber and the EPR instead of being with the Syndicate. Their ties were probably cut with the Syndicate now but if they didn't do anything then they would probably lose Hei too. He didn't want his kitty TV to end so soon...but the chance was there.
More than Just a Contractor – Chapter 10
Amber activated her power, the light blue aura of synchrotron radiation appeared around her and her eyes gained the red glow as time froze around her. Her payment was already kicking in but that didn't matter. Walking towards the future she felt a cold shiver down her spine. She shrugged it off as nothing and continued. She found the future and her body froze.
Standing in front of her was a blood bath; multiple bodies were lying on the ground. Some bodies were still intact like they had been killed on the inside rather than sustaining damage on the outside while other bodies were missing limbs. This wasn't the future she had seen a while ago, this was an alternative future where her plan had failed. Amber walked through the streets cautiously, this was only a glimpse but if her plan had failed and Hei had gotten to the gate then this was going to be the future. She knew that it wasn't set in stone and maybe this was just a warning to her saying that she needed to work quicker or this was going to happen. She found Misaki still alive and just clinging onto life but Amber ran over to her.
"What happened?" Amber asked. Misaki looked at Amber before she looked away.
"You were wrong...it wasn't his contractor side fighting for dominance over him...He's trying to stop what happened to Li...Li got to the gate...the gate did something and everything went to hell!"
"What do you mean?"
"Heaven's Gate had been planning this...it changed Li into the monster he is now. The only way to save him...is to destroy Hell's Gate!"
"No, there's got to be another way!" Amber cried out in desperation. If the very thing they were trying to save was going to end everything then the Syndicate was right...and she would have been wrong.
"Get back into the past...and find BK-201...he gets split from Li and BK-201. Find him and then maybe this future can change." Misaki tried to smile at Amber but the sound of footsteps started to echo. Amber looked up to see her nightmare.
