John, do you use a tablet for the hair or other features?

I use it for everything now. What do you want to try?

Shading which gets me the most. Deciding where light shades are and darker shades are. Can you help me?

Best thing to try, is to only used tones/shades of colour. Do all the dark area first on one layer, then do the same on the next tone/shade colour. Once you have that done and mastered. You can get out 10 tones/shades and so on.
I might sort out a AI file that shows what I do later.

Great job! I like the whole piece!
As far as the hair, are they brush strokes on top of a solid dark color? Just wondering. I use Illustrator a lot, but more for control drawings. I've never tried a portrait illustration with it.

Thanks. All the single hairs and transparent. Plus they are all on different layers, which help to editing them at the end to get them right.

this is really awesome, super detailed and reallly cool. Im curious though, how do you manage the hair? is it done with strokes, do you draw out shapes, or what? im curious as to how people have so much detail in their hair, there must be at least a slightly easier way than drawing each strand...
anyways, like i said, truly wicked stuff!

I choose one colour per layer on the hair strokes. Which are at about 50% transparent, so it look like I have done more work. The one above is done with strokes, but I tend to mix solid shapes with it.

I love the color tones in this image. I noticed someone mentioned not liking the hair, but I actually like the difference in textures. You have the smoothness of her face then the roughness of the hair. Just my opinion!
Your whole gallery is lovely. A great find.
