Description

Of all the magic in the lands of Agartha, none is feared as much as the death magic. Few people are born with the ability to cast any of the 3 types of magic and among those the ones who have an affinity for death magic are the rarest of them all.

It were none other than the humans with their multitude of cultures who would see some cultures emerging that lifted the ban on death magic usage. Other than the undead themselves, no other species dares to make use of this power and those exceptionally few among the humans who do are called necromancers.

The usage of soul magic is already viewed with skepticism among many of the intelligent species that inhabit the world of Agartha for its manipulation and potentially harmful effects on souls whose long-term consequences Agarthians have little knowledge on. Death magic is believed to summon the souls from the world of the dead into those of the living and keep them trapped there with no known way to return them. By many this is seen as an insult to life, as a blasphemous crime, the ultimate taboo that not many wield the power to break since their birth.

For the longest time death magic was even believed to be unwieldable by species other than the undead. It was only by chance that one of the humans rediscovered this once ancient art to resurrect and control the dead, to even cheat death itself. Necromancers hold high esteem among the few human nations who allow them to use their magic freely.

The undead are universally regarded as evil creatures and death magic which can summon and control these creatures is also deemed to be of an evil nature. Among some religions it is believed that the casting of death magic transforms the blood of the caster into demon blood, their soul drawn away from their body and caged in Agartha for eternity much like that of the undead themselves. For this reason it is rumored that soul magic and descent matter which reacts to souls does not affect a necromancer, which adds to the fear that many people have of death magic users and anything related to it.

It is unknown whether necromancers can die, but none is known to have died ever since the magic has been rediscovered. Together with the wizards the necromancers are the most formidable power across all nations of the human armed forces.
