Description

Species: Aculeos
Class: Carapaceon
Rank: Low Rank
Element: Water
Weakness: Thunder

Biological Description:

Flavor Text:
A smaller-sized Carapaceon that is easily identified by its scorpion-like tail, large fins, and glowing markings.

Habitat:
Deep, watery areas like lakes and seabeds. Is often found either swimming or walking near the bottom.

Diet:
It feeds on any prey smaller than itself; often crabs and slow swimming fish.

How It Hunts:
Due to its compound eyes its sight is rather limited and Aculeos feel prey vibrations with their fins. It has a few techniques it uses to hunt; some are used in conjunction with each other. It can flap its fins to stir up the lake or sea floor and unbury hiding prey. It can crack bones or shells it finds with its beak. It slashes or pierces its prey with its blade-like tail. It may also try to spook or dazzle prey with its luminescent display. It has been known to come to shore to scavenge. On land, it can hit prey with a high pressured water jet from its mouth.

Behavior:
Timid around larger monsters though may use its threat display when threatened. Becomes more aggressive the hungrier it is.

Size:
The combination of body and legs stand at roughly the height of a large popo. The tail, when curved, is half that. Unfurled the tail is about the length of the head and body, can be a little longer. Each fin is a little longer than its head and body when fully extended.

Threats:
Most common threat is bigger Carapaceons. Due to its somewhat slow swimming pattern, it is also weak toward swift swimming piscine monsters and leviathans.

Adaptations:
- The hooked beak is great for piercing skin and soft shells of prey or attackers.
- The mandibles by its mouth can hold squirming prey.
- Its carapace is thick with wide ridges to protect itself from predators who bite or otherwise grab it. The underside is similarly plated like the underside, but is more flat than the topside. Its body has limited flexibility curling outward, but it can curve inward like a pillbug.
- Two giant spongey/rubbery fins that it uses to steer itself in currents. Can tuck them nearly all the way into its shell to use its legs.
- There are thin spines where the body and tail join. They are hard, urchin-like, and protect a soft gill-like area underneath them.
- It has a segmented tail with a blade-like “stinger” it uses to pierce and slash.
- When enraged or intimidated it has a luminescent display where its body glows in areas shown. Its large fins are part of its display, but it is quick to pull them in is the case of a battle. It may rear up on either its front legs or its hindlegs to angle the display at the predator/enemy.
- Can shoot a jet of water from its mouth versus terrestrial opponents.

Key Traits:
- 5 compound eyes (1 big center one, surrounded by 4 smaller ones)
- purple coloring throughout its body
- not shown but its underside is the lighter purple like the blade of the tail
- a beak-like mouth
- mandibles on either side of its mouth
- thick segmented carapace(underside design is similar to the back carapace, but much flatter)
- 2 flexible spongey/rubbery fins on either side of its body
- hard urchin-like spines at joint of body and tail
- segmented tail
- blade-like “stinger” at the tip of its tail
- has various circular patterns and areas on its shell that can glow a light blue
