Description
Finally...I didn't know that it is actually possible to create pictures in poster-size with a usual ballpoint-pen. Well, now I know...
The monster project is finished. Unfortunately I wasn't able to post the whole picture in one step, because deviantART doesn't support pictures above 10 megapixels. Therefore I had to divide the picture into several subpictures. This is like a "map" for the whole thing to understand the connections between the single parts. Just check out the links below to see the whole details.

I know that there are some weaker and some stronger parts in this picture. The problem with such enormous large deviations is to keep the quality level during the whole process. This isn't really difficult if you only work with digital media or did already perfectionize your style to a level, where it can only be improved on minor details any more. I had a lot of problems to make the parts fit together, because I am still working on my style. I've learned uncountable things about my shading technique, especially the different surfaces and interaction shadows. Therefore the earlier parts of the picture (have fun finding out which they are
I had a lot of fun creating those little pictures in the frames hidden all over the deviation. They are actually some kind of composition experiment, but in my humble opinion they make the picture look much more coherent. I've also tried to draw as many new characters as possible to give each part of the picture a touch of diversity.
The digital background is a combination between 6.1mp-photos shot with my digicam and several hours of handmade digital work.
Just to give you a light impression of the creation process:
This piece took about 350 hours of work, whereof not even 5 percent were digital. Ballpoint-pen pictures always take much more time than digital pictures, but in this case it was just a huge challenge not to give up and keep on sketching and shading.
The whole pictures were created on 38 DinA4-pages of usual printer paper (100g), not counting the uncountable sketch sheets I used to figure out how the whole thing will look like. 3 poor and (quite probably) innocent ballpoint-pens were killed while shading.
To find out more about the shading itself, please check out my ballpoint-pen tutorial, which also contains a (small) part of this deviation.

Thanks to everyone, who kept motivating me in the last 3 months. This picture wouldn't look the way it does now without you! (I think you probably know who you are and listing everyone of you would just take too much space
Comments are highly appreciated, full-view is a MUST!
To find out more about my thoughts concerning this picture, check out the descriptions of the detail pages.
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO FAVED AND COMMENTED THIS PIECE! AND OF COURSE TO PUNKROMANCE AND DHOLMS FOR THE SUGGESTION AND FEATURE AS A DAILY DEVIATION! IT'LL TAKE A WHILE TO REPLY TO ALL THE COMMENTS, BUT I'LL GIVE MY BEST

OMG. Ballpoint pen you say? And I thought traditional art almost died out. You are one of the people that prove I was wrong - thank you.

Thank you! I think it's very important to start with traditional media before changing to digital works, because it makes you understand the basics of the digital pieces. At the point when I started work with digital backgrounds, I already had a certain level of traditional abilities, which made me stick to it. I wouldn't change anything looking back

The deviation is actually from April, my art has changed from that point The next few pictures were of course not that big. I came back to smaller pictures and mainly improved my background technique. Just click on the link in my signature to check out my gallery, if you want to

This... is... monstrous.
I can't find another word to describe its immensity. The amount of work, dedication and times when you'd chuck it all out your window must have been incredible, but the final result really pays off. If I had the money I'd buy it poster size to keep coming back to look at all the details, right now it's too much information to handle.
At least I can fave it to have a look at it now and then.
Amazing work man. ^^

Yupp, it's a ballpoint-pen drawing. Thanks a lot! I think that ballpoint pens are - along with pencils - the only pens that don't really set a limit of detail. That's why my pictures developed in this direction. I am simply fascinated by pictures that catch your eye and make you look at them for some time. My basic idea wasn't really to make it that huge, but more to put a lot of details in it that need a second look to be discovered.

This is by far the most superb funny+political work I've seen so far.. so childishly amusing, yet it takes but a few scratches to see it's much more serious nature.. the detail is breathtaking, it takes a good 15+ minutes to go through it all, and I really can't find anything to critique, just compliment..a really deserved daily deviation, and a fav from me (it's the least I can do to get more people to see it).. you should really really put this as a print, I think it'd get a lot of buyers. Once again, in other words, great work, keep it up cuz you've got tons of talent and ideas.

Thank you very, very much! I actually thought about posting it as a print, but it's not really possible, as the deviantart-rules forbid pictures that are larger than 10 megapixels - and this piece definitely is. Reducing its size means also to reduce its detail, and I think that would destroy the whole idea behind the picture... Very artistic thoughts, I know :S
The piece was created in a very creative moment. I was very glad to have new ideas while working on it, and it wasn't easy to stay motivated and creative all the time. That's why I'm so proud of this piece to be finished.
Thanks again! People like you make my day

I want an Elk Beer
There are so many, so, so many perfect little funny and clever ideas in this. SO MANY. Some of my favourites are the mouse piloting a helicopter-projector, the just married sign, Sputnik dragging a tape down and the previously mentioned HARM_ _ _ hangman. What's the second equation next to E=mc^2 ?
How big is the overall piece? I would love a print of it, somehow at high detail, but I fear it would be larger than A1, A0?
Even at the high detail level the background colouring is amazing. Such a contrast against the ballpoint - and the ballpoint work itself is incredible, at least to me.
Is that a Sigur Ros guy in the top left?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
forkfighter In reply to SlideBeneathTheCity [2006-09-04 18:15:17 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much! The equation is - as far as I can still remember - something that we here in Germany call the midnight formula. (x1,2=-b+/- root(b²-4ac)/2a)
The overall piece is close to 3m high, I think. I never printed it because of this reason. It's not listed in the standard formats, because it's not wide enough for its hight to fit to them.
I am not really satisfied with the background, mainly because it's a bit too incoherent to me. Just check out my latest pieces to see what I'd like this background to look like Well, that wouldn't be possible, since even this method took about 3 days to create...
Actually I don't know Sigur Ros - I mean I am familiar with the fact that it is a scandinavian band performing melancholic music, but that's not really my kind of stuff It was more inspired by a video of a very unpopular and bad German band called TippTopp or something like that. They had an astronaut playing an instrument in their video, and I really liked that idea

SlideBeneathTheCity In reply to forkfighter [2006-09-04 18:43:39 +0000 UTC]
3m hahaha. perhaps it would work as 3 separate prints joined together If it's possible I want it!
One kind of famous thing about Sigur ros is that they play guitars with violin bows. Quite a weird atmospheric sound.
And the equation we call the quadratic equation solution...midnight formula?! sounds weird . I thought it looked a bit like the black body radiation equation, but no
I looked at some of your other stuff and it was all really good, hence the watch. Quality stuff man, keep it up

forkfighter In reply to SlideBeneathTheCity [2006-09-05 00:12:40 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much! I will, definitely.
I listened to a mp3 file from the Sigur Ros homepage some time ago. In general, I like weird music, especially experimental metal like Arcturus and bands like that. But Sigur Ros... I don't know. I think I should listen to them for a longer time, since they're not too easy to understand, but II don't really want to invest time into a band that I don't quite like
It's probably possible to size it down a bit and print it. I mean, if you make it 2 meters high, that would probably still be enough and maybe even printeable. I'll note you if I really print it.
Thanks for watching!
