Description Elasmosaurus was one of the largest plesiosaurs, a group of aquatic reptiles that are often mistaken for dinosaurs. Living in the ocean that covered the middle part of North America 75 million years ago, this long-necked predator used its sharp teeth to snatch fish and other water-dwelling prey. Its four flippers propelled it through the water at high speeds, and allowed it to chase after the fastest fish in the sea.
