This is a photo I took a few weeks ago, on a little afternoon trip with . We went to a recently burned area near where we live, and tried to capture some photographs of the charred sage. It was a lot harder than it sounds! Plus we kept kicking up ash, which was a little nerve wracking around the cameras.
Anyway, I figured I would dig this out and share it now.

Your picture reminds me of what happened at Yellowstone in 1988? The fires that destroyed about half of the woods there? I was out of the country, and bummed that I'd never get to see it like was (because trees grow so slowly up there), but I visited the Park about five years ago, and the trees have recovered very well. I suppose all that ash really helped fertilize the soil. The trees are only 20' or so at the tallest, and you can still see many of the charred trunks, but I think in a century it won't be that evident, at all.
