Usually, Spring can understand everything Goldie wants to communicate to her with the greatest of ease. Despite his lack of a structural sign language, he can still have conversations with her and make his opinions known.
Unfortunately, even if she's right 99 times out of 100, there's always that one other time....

This reminds me of myself and the family dog... we communicate SO much with just motions, looks and grunts. He knows exactly which stare or tone of my voice means what. Go slower, sit, stop begging, beg, go ahead, play, stop... my mom's husband claims that there is truth to me being part animal, since HE raised the dog and trained him to do different things by certain commands, and have issues having the dog pulling them off no matter how hard he pronounces them or wave his hands xD I just look at him firmly but kindly, bulge my eyes slighty and throw my gaze to the floor quickly, and he sits.
I've also learned to seperate his different sounds and looks to understand the few times he expresses a need or desire. Be it having to do his business, feeling lonely, feeling sick, being restless or just lonely.
So I totally Believe that Spring and Goldie has this level of understanding

Ha ha ha ha! Good one. His gestures are clear enough to me: on Monday it looks like he's jerking a thumb over his shoulder. On Tuesday he's suggesting they go to a taffy pull. On Wednesday he's criticizing The Karate Kid.
I dig all the extra arms in the fifth panel. I can just see him gesticulating more and more emphatically as she just stares, occasionally blinking with an audible plink.
