She was almost done dressing up the Happiny. The Baby Pokemon hadn’t moved a lot. As long as she had her little egg shaped smooth stone, she was happy, emitting sounds that made no sense for anyone but her. The only missing thing was some jewelry. Luckily, there was a jewel chest box near and Beth moved her hand to pick one up. However she removed it quickly when her hand touched something fleshy. She looked up and saw a stern looking woman, staring down at her.

“Hello!” she greeted with a bright smile. “You want a necklace too?”

“Yes, please. I apologize I didn’t see you wanted this one.” the woman said, looking embarrassed.

“Don’t be! There is no harm done! What do you want the pearl for?”

The woman didn’t answer. Not with words. Instead, she gestured at a Pokemon who was in a corner. It was black and red and had the cutest little derpy expression that Bethany had ever seen. The Zorua’s tongue was out and he just looked back at them, its little head tilted to the side. This made Bethany’s heart melt even more, and laugh. She walked to the Pokemon and picked it up.

“What a cutie you are.” she told the Zorua. “You made a great choice, selecting this one. It’s so adorable!”

Once more, the woman didn’t utter any answer. She looked away, a faint blush on her cheeks. She was clearly embarrassed. But also relived that the young girl didn’t judge her for her choice.

Beth placed the Zorua on the table and patted its head.

“It’s your first time dressing up a Pokemon?”

A nod answered her question. Margaux struggled selecting clothes for a Pokemon, in comparison to a person. She found the latter easier. How could she know what fit a Pokemon? She definitely was unsure and rather sheepish about it.

“You’re in luck!” Bethany exclaimed. “There are so many different clothes here! You’ll surely find some that will make this little pup look handsome, right?” She brought a small clothes chest and started rummaging through it, taking some clothing items and accessories out and showing them to Margaux. She was speaking all the while to help Margaux relax.

“Don’t worry. Pokemon aren’t made of glass! If they are handled with care, you can do whatever you want with them. That’s easier than with kids, if you ask me.'' She took a black and red hat and placed it in Margaux’ hands. “It would fit Minx just fine!” she announced. “The colors are the right ones! And you can use the necklace too!” she added, pushing the jewelry box to Margaux.

While the older woman was dressing up the Zorua, Beth completed the Happiny’s outfit with a soft purple silk ribbon to keep her head fur in a nice little pigtail. A small cough caught her attention. Margaux was apparently done and was showing her her work. She looked so unsure and questioning her choice, Beth had to hide her smile: The Zorua’s expression was so derpy, with his little tongue out.

“Maybe this isn’t the best. No worry! There are many more choices!” She gestured at the many boxes and outfits that were hanging on racks all around them! “We’ll find the right one for little Derpy Minx here.”

So the search started. They selected several outfits, witch with dark clothes and point hat, pirate with leather jacket and black pants and an eyepatch, Kantonian people of old, with a mask, dark clothes and small and delicate dragons embroidered on the outfit, wizard with long grey robe and a grey beard. They used the pointy hat again. Then they tried as a detective with a long black coat and a red shirt. The pokemon grinned, unsettling both women, though they didn’t know why. Without consulting each other, they decided to try something else like other pokemon outfits, like Mimikyu, Eevee…

With each costume they tried, Margaux relaxed and enjoyed herself more and more. This caused Beth to have even more fun to see the older woman entertained by it. Eventually, Margaux selected a small dark blue shirt, with a cape and a little sword. She completed the work with a fake gold tiara.

“A knight! How valiant and fierce he looks! Ready to go on his next adventure, aren’t you? But such a courageous knight needs company for his quest!” She placed her Happiny next to him. “And here she is! The mighty sorceress fairy that will be here to back him up when his sword isn’t enough to defeat the dragon!” she announced. Beth loved epic tales of adventure. Her words made Margaux smile. The woman was weak for love stories. And love stories could happen during adventures. She didn’t remember when was the last time she had read a good love story. She had always been so busy.

“They are ready.” she simply said. “We should bring them to the Merchant.”

“And made them parade!” Beth reminded her.“That’s the whole point of the activity.” The older woman didn’t seem convinced. She still followed Bethany to the runway and placed her Zorua knight on the platform. The Pokemon remained unmoving, as if it had stage fright.

Beth placed the Happiny next to it. She didn’t seem to care where she was as she twirled and danced, enjoying herself. She tried to get the Zorua to follow her and her move, but it ran to Margaux, trying to get in her arms for protection.

“Not everyone can be a star.” she simply said, petting the Pokemon. “You’re cute anyway.” That seemed to please the Zorua whose tongue stuck out and he had a small bark. They watched as the Happiny showed off her grace and outfit, trying to charm the audience with her baby doll eyes and her sweet kiss.

Once she was done, Beth took her back and offered Margaux that they go grab a bite and experience some food from the festival booth. They deserved it after the work they had done, and so did the Pokemon, after their performance.
