King Fjolnir - The Powerful and Prosperous

Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, sometimes Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s King Fjolnir / Fjölnir / Fjǫlnir / Fjolne. A legendary and possibly mythical swedish king in Norse Mythology. Mentioned in the Grottasöngr and Ynglinga saga.

His name can be translated as ‘’the One who Knows Much” or “Keeper of Many Secrets”. From the Old Norse Fjol meaning ‘many’ or ‘much’ Or from the Old Norse Fela meanng ‘ hidden’ or ‘secret’. And old Norse Nir indicating it as a masculine title, or ‘man of’. Also used by Odin as one of his names.

Said to be the son of Freyr and Gerd. He is strangely unpowered and mortal.

He was said to be a powerful king, overseeing, and maintaining a time of peace and bounty gifted by his parents and his wisdom. And possibly from the magic of two giantesses he had imprison who could grind from a millstone anything including peace and happiness and prosperity. At least until he sold them to King Frodi who foolishly did not treat them as well, and lead to Frodi’s cursed downfall.

After his father Freyr’s death it’s said that he became tired or drunk one night and drowned in a vat of mead. Possibly while visiting a friend.

He is attributed as the originator of the Yngling dynasty.
