The USA held public executions until ~1900 (bunch of Indian rebels hangedO). The trouble with these executions aside from the possibility of error and the excessiveness of some hangings was that a carnival atmosphere prevailed and small felonies abounded: pockets picked, etc.
I said the above to a pic in Rule34 which showed Krystal the fox, Blaze the Cat and Amy Rose all hanged in the nude (Amy Rose is still fighting hard for life, but the other 2 just ...hung). I had logged on under the name of Negative Man and some wag replied "Another factoid from the Negster".
