unbelievably beautiful shot- as others have said- it is the gaze that makes this so special- in one captured moment- locking eyes with this most beautiful beast you feel, all in a single instant, his pain, his sorrow- even his boredom- yet this intense stare also projects incredible pride & strength- although there is a sense- a little hint- of a fleeting seconds content as he is captured taking in a refreshing drink- his eyes reveal to us something else- something deeper- flashing a lifetime of struggle- and despite taking this pause for a quick drink, the king is never really at rest, he is acutely aware of his surroundings- and most certainly of you (if you are indeed the photographer). I can't imaging capturing a more intimate shot of a lion!
However, i believe i have read others mention this as well- the colors are much too strong- they are way oversaturated- especially the color of the lion himself- it takes away from the raw, organic quality that i discussed above which is what makes the shot so beautiful in the first place-
