Description
quite a few people on tumblr have asked me how i make my shrinky dink charms that i sell at cons, so i decided to make a tutorial!to see the full tutorial go here: geothebio.tumblr.com/post/6018β¦
feel free to make your own charms (just don't copy the design i use here) for relatively little money! if you live in the UK, shrinky dinks are virtually impossible to find in stores. the good news is, you can order them on amazon, in a variety of styles. i know some shrinky dink sheets have a rough side that is used for colored pencil use, but the sheets i used here didn't have a rough side, so i had to use sandpaper. if your sheets have a rough side, don't use sandpaper!
happy crafting!

I wouldnt recomend mod podge if you want your charms to be water proof because it is water based and will basically turn into a sticky mess. You can buy a cheap pray can sealant that will work very well for these kinds of charms and other things if you need them to be waterproof!

Lots of things are water-based, but become waterproof when dry. I don't know if Mod Podge is, but regular PVA is waterproof when dry and Mod Podge is mostly just watered-down PVA (but maybe some other stuff too?)

My biggest problem with mod podge is that things coated in it tend to stick to other things coated in it which is horrible because it acts like a very sturdy glue in that case. I've also had it turn to a sticky mess when it got wet. That could be because I was buying the wrong kind but I don't like taking the chance anymore now that I found something easier to deal with.

Do you use a spray or does theΒ acrylic sealant you use come in a bottle you can paint on the back or something?

I use a spray but you can use some scrap paper spray a bunch on it and you can paint the charm that way for a thinner coat. I've done that a couple of times. The only problem is I had a lot of trouble cleaning the brush. I had to soak it in paint thinner over night for any kind of cleaning.

I used spray sealant on a charm I made and it immediately melted the Sharpie. It was a streaky mess.

Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel. Maybe because it's used for home improvement projects and not art projects, but one spray and I had a very runny Fluttershy charm.

I use acrylic sealant. It works great for me, so I haven't tried much else. Always worth trying though!

Thanks! These look adorable <3 I have to ask, when you're tracing over it, what are you tracing the picture on? Like isΒ it just an average piece of plastic ?
I can't wait to try this

the thing i'm tracing the picture on is the shrinky dink material!
i also heard that you can use #6 plastic containers just as well as the shrink plastic sheets but i've never tried it
(there are loads of tutorials on it if you google it)

It's this really specific kind of plastic that shrinks and thickens when you heat it :3 it's really fun stuff (called poly shrink in Australia)

Actually they're still branded Shrinky Dinks here in australia - just depends whereabouts a store has sourced them from. But all the ones I've ever bought have been labelled shrinky dink

Maybe? I know the last two packets i bought were Shrinky Dinks.
Ha, mine's at least a year or so old now - need to get some of the clear ones, i only got the solid white sheets atm.

That explains it - I got mine as a gift probably between 5-10 years ago (I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to art materials ) but mine's the solid white stuff too; might have to try this new clear stuff
