I give you props for taking on a hard subject. Ice on the Beard? That's tough, bro. The over all feel is right though, it just feels cold and miserable. The flesh tones you used drive it home more than the ice beard, for me anyway. Well done! Next time......"Myrmidon in Desert!"

Thanks man!
I might just give that one a try once it gets too hot down here!

I love that. I actually do get the feel that his hair would break off if someone pulled it since it's so rigid from the frost.

Poor, guy.
Morigar says he can borrow a cloak.
I'm really digging the icicles on his beard. It looks perfect. I see improvement in your work.

I like how the colours are kind of dull and washed together. Usually winter pictures are sparkly, but this makes it look cold and damp and ... I wish it were summer. lol.

They aren't transparent. Or at least not AS transparent. That must be interesting getting used to. That and the fact that you don't have to work from lightest to darkest. Any interesting revelations?

GH-MoNGo In reply to turbosuo [2009-01-21 04:54:52 +0000 UTC]
Actually it's not as much a matter of transparency/opacity as it is the vehicle; acrylic emulsion vs. gum arabic. They react differently in water. The acrylics don't lift, so it's easier to build up tones, but at the same time they don't react the same in washes.

Actually I always found washes very difficult in any medium, with the one exception being ink. The one thing I really like about acrylics is the layering ability. I prefer to go from darkest to lightest and acrylics and oils are the only two traditional mediums that really allow me to work that way. I am really interested in trying gouache sometime, to see how it compares to acrylic.

try working from black (or indeed any colour) with acrylics. it's all sorts of different - the colours seem to behave differently, i guess.
for example, "melt" [link] on black.
"scribbly sunset" [link] on grey.
"drown" [link] on burnt orange.
i was going to try and compare "melt" to a painting i did straight on white canvas, but i realised i haven't done that in such a long time, it just doesn't work. i'm not ashamed of what i used to paint like, but it's got nothing on what i do now.
have you tried working with a flow medium or retarder, with acrylics? it thins out the paint in a different way to water.

I've done that before with my painting "Gnoll on a Mission". At least I worked from dark to light.

I wish I had taken a better pic. Bleh.
And yes, I have. I like fluid matte medium for that purpose. Retarder is good in small amounts for painting heavier wet-into-wet.

I feel ya there my Dwarven brother. Cold as a witches Tit where i am too.
Crackin' start with the acrylics man, i must say that towards the arse end of last year seeing your water colour experiments inspired me to pick up the brush for the first time since college and buy myself some oil paints to play about with.
I'm only working in a tiny 15x10 (6"x5") book at the mo, what size do you tend to work in?

Thanks, brother!
This one here is 5"x5". Most of my more completed works are 8"x10" or 9"x12".

A little more emphasis on the breath and a few bright dots of white on the frozen tips to look more like highlights sparkling off the frozen tips. (Been there, done that. Was -64F and rejoiced when we finally saw a week of 32F.) That dude needs a major fur throw over his shoulders. ^_^
Love the scrumble technique. It's textural, earthy, lively. Well done.

Yeah. Hair broke off were it froze. We wore felt masks to keep our breaths from freezing on our skin. Even eyelashes froze shut when our eyes teared up. Goggles were manditory. Don't *ever* want to go through that again.
