"Ambush? What ambush?"Apparently goblins aren't too good at setting up surprise attacks. Something must have tipped the gnoll to their position. Any ideas as to what it could have been?

this painting works well in small view ~ of course it's a lot better closeup, like most battlescenes .. but the essential elements can be appreciated at a glance, not easy with involved multi-character scenarios

I like this. The texture that the watercolor adds to it gives it a more 'Adventure in the Woods' feel to it.
The lighter trees don't distract and contrast well with the darker figures in the foreground.

I say one dropped a gold coin by accident and the others tripped over each other to get the coin... so the Gnoll turns around like "...wtf" and discovers the ambush plans and destroys them? Aye? :3

Kick Ass! I really love the textures you have in this one. I noticed that your anatomy is stronger. I also love the subtle colors. It give it lots of interesting features. I am really anticipating what you will be doing in the future as you start your art classes.

This is probably the best work of your's I've ever seen. Your hands are getting much, much, MUCH better- and there's a lot of drama to the poses. The palette is good as usual- I would just work on your thumb placement a little more and perfect that hand grip. A little more graphic work on the wounds would also be nice to see from you.

Oh wow, I haven't checked your work lately and now I see this and damn you have improved quite a lot!
I don't really know what it is exactly, but the colours look more rich and the shading is more intense than it used to be.

I made a conscious effort to get the dark values in the shadows a lot darker to give the figures more of a sense of depth. Good to know that it's starting to pay off.

Hey man you've raised the bar with this one. Great composition, the angled view adds loads of dynamism. If you could lighten the trees is the background and darken the two goblins in the extreme foreground I think you would create a better sense of depth. As it is the color values are a little too similar creating a flattening effect. Try altering it on Photoshop first though- it would be reckless to risk damaging a strong piece like this.
Was it the towel and skull pinned to the tree that gave their position away?

I'll definitely give that a try. I didn't want to go too dark with the goblins in the front because I was afraid they'd carry too much compositional weight and draw focus away from the one goblin who's about to be in need of a very large bandage or two.

Really, really diggin this one, Darrenn. I like the expression and the amount of texturing and movement. I couldn't stop staring at the closest goblin's skin for a minute there. I love the dappling of color!
