It is layered. I will be animating it later when I have the time too do something of that sort.

On a side note, I came across your page through the random deviant thing and I was impressed. I love vector art, though I am new at it.

dA chess? Little Jarks as the King, Phae as the queen, then staff members play the other pieces, then us lowly ='s or *'s or ~'s be the pawns.

I have pondered on that, but I do not see how it can be done, from my experience in animation. I know that someone who does flash "might" be able to do that, but I am unsure on that myself. I am not that experienced in flash.

It is not animated at this time, it is simply just a stationary chess set. The animation part will be coming later, and probebly as a different deviation.
