Description
I don’t remember where I was going
Rushing to get there and see what lies ahead
Taking the fast lane just because I am tired of taking it slow
There was suppose to be a final destination to this trip
And now I’m on the road but I don’t know where

I don’t remember where I was going
But here I am

This is an Infra Red filter (Hoya R72) used on my Nikon D70. I used a Tripod and blended a regular shot with the Infra Red shot for this result.
Infra Red ---> [link]

The shot was taken in Kadita, nestled in the Galilee Mountains at an altitude of 780m, on the southern slope of Kutar Mountain.

I was there doing a photo shoot for the Tourism department of Israel, and though it wasn't about these kind of shots, I simply can't resist

fantastic angle you captured - I see elements that would make great photos, but am not always sure how to compose them in my viewfinder...

hello gilad,

the image is really awesome!

I'm also very interested in how you exactly did the blending between the IR and normal photo

would be great if you could explain it somewhere

dave

Along with what Gilad said (about having to use a tripod and not move the camera so you can take the same shot with and without the infrared filter), you can open both the pictures in Photoshop and copy/paste one onto the other so they're both in the same window. Then move the infrared layer on top of the non-infrared layer, add a layer mask to the infrared layer (you can add a layer mask by clicking one of the small buttons at the bottom of the layer pallette), then brush over the portion of the picture that you wish to be non-infrared with a soft-edged brush, probably 60-70% hardness on a round brush.

As you brush, the non-infrared picture should show up. If it doesn't, you might have the layers arranged incorrectly (the infrared needs to be on top of the non-infrared), or you might not be brushing in the layer mask (make sure you click on the empty white box--that's the mask--on the infrared layer in the layers pallette). Brush over whatever you want to be non-infrared and that's basically blending the two layers together

Well dave,
You have to plan the blend in advance so you will have the exact shot in IR and regular. You use a tripod and use the exact frame for both after you change the WB, change the settings, and screw the filter off and back on. If you did that you have two exact shot. You place them in two layers on top of each other in PS and choose the blending, It could be multiply of soft light (what I did here) or another, and you can change the opacity to fit the resault you want

thank you Gilad and Justin,

for your very good explanation!
I tried something like this some weeks ago with a very simular technique in awakening .
The problem with this picture was the vertical blending through the sky. Because with the D80+R72 I have to use an shutterspeed >20 seconds to get a good result and then it's gets tricky with blending

any way, thanks again both for your good and fast answer!

The D80 is not a good camera for IR...

Dave-Derbis In reply to gilad [2007-05-03 21:19:44 +0000 UTC]

yes, you're right the D80 is not optimal for IR
but with a little bit patience and addiction you also can get good IR results like reborn stars , I think

yours, dave

That reminds me, I have to go pick up an IR filtaer ASAP.

But about the shot, I love the way you blended it. The clouds look simplay amazing. The bold color of the car is also another nice feature. I absolutely love the effect IR has on grass as well. It all looks so very surreal. Another amazing shot gilad. Keep em coming
