Description Let's go to Echo

The last few meters to the saferoom were without any event, we could go inside relaxed. It was a kind of clothing room, normally hidden behind a wall, but because of a train cart, there was yet another hole. Francis patched himself up. Outside of the saferoom the floor split. "Two ways: Left, right, split?" I asked. Everyone was for splitting. Zoey smiled at me. "Daniel, you and me again, to the right?" Before I could answer, Francis cut me off. "Go there if you feel to, you two love-birds. We gonna meet at the exit." Instead to say something and receive a stupid commentary, I opened the door and went to the right, Zoey followed close to me. "Do you feel annoyed by all those comments about our feelings for each other, too?" I asked her. "Not really. Oh, the guys are over there." The right way was just a longer version of the left one. The architect deserved to get beaten to death for this, but there was still a small room on the right to explore. Some zombies were there, but also two molotovs. We took both and regrouped with the others, who found an exit. The path went straight through the woods, but there was no other option. Zoey threw her pipe-bomb outside. "Why using complicated ways when there is a simple solution? That's going to kill most of those zombies." I took my molotov and made a few steps outside. Above us were some more zombies, which I could hear, tossed the molotov over the edge and a fence. A direct hit – what made the tank, which was hiding up there, pretty mad about me. It ran around the fence and came down near a loose log. Before I was able to react, I got hit by the log and felt on the ground. "Dammit... I'm down!" The others tried to distract the Tank, meanwhile I tried to get up but the pain was too much for me. In addition came a Horde and rushed to me. "Ow, hey! Stop...! Don't! Ouf! Shoo! Get away!" They didn't and I tried my best not to die. About the Tank, I could just make wild guesses, but the fact Zoey flew past me was a bad sign. "Zoey! Gimme a hand!" She looked at the Tank shortly and started to mow down the Horde, what thought I would be a sandbag. My vision started to fade away, the pain became to be too much for a human. The seconds, that passed, felt like hours. Zoey sounded to be miles away. "Wake up, Daniel. Come on!" More than a grunt I wasn't able to give as an answer. "Okay, you want it the hard way, don't you?" she said and kissed me. That instantly revived my from the dead. The kiss passed a few seconds and I enjoyed every one of them. "Do you wake up people always that way?" I asked. "Yep, every time." "Then do me a favor and wake me up more often, but first get me back on my feet, okay?"
Just back on my feet, I was blind. A Boomer sneaked up to us and vomited from above. "Not again..." I moaned and tried to clear my view. The first thing I saw was a Hunter flying towards me. "AAAHH!" I was incapacitated again and fought the Hunter as good as possible. Zoey couldn't help me either, she got hit, too. The guys were also biled – yet it was possible for Bill to shove that Hunter of me. Louis threw a pipe-bomb at the same time. The Horde was gone with that and Francis helped me back up. "Relax, I gotcha.  But, shit, we gotta get you some first aid, cuz you go down like this again and it's over." Everything I saw was blurry and shacked, my whole body felt like a Tank hugged me and then I felt on my ass. No famous black and white view. Zoey crouched in front of me and took her first-aid-kit from her back and healed me. After a few minutes everything was fine and felt almost alive again. "Everything all right again, Daniel? You're alive again?" asked Louis. I nodded and got back up. Bill moved ahead slowly and yelled "Come on, we need to keep moving." Through a dale-like path between the trees we continued, then we turned right and went up on a hill. There were some zombies, but nothing worth to be mentioned happened. Upside was a the entrance to a service-building. "Taking bets we come back to the rails that way" said Zoey. Through the door we climbed down stairs and went right. "Finally, and now head north." I said. But we didn't come too far, after a few hundred meters were the rails blocked again. "Goddamn, the rails are blocked" swore Bill. I shook my head. "I've got the feeling, someone wants to prevent us to get out of here." Francis said nothing and looked at a wooden bridge, what went from left to right across the rails above the ground. "You know - I bet we could knock that bridge down." Zoey nodded. "Great idea, Francis. With this train cart here we probably could take down that bridge." She put a hand on the lever and looked asking into the group. "Let's go, Zoey" said Louis and with a metallic screaming the cart slowly moved toward the bridge, hit a second cart, which forced the bridge to collapse. "Run! Over the bridge, hurry!" I said. Zombies came from all sides to us and wanted to get on the bridge – and all at the same time. The result was a first-class-korken. We didn't want to challenge our luck and kept running. "There we should be safe" said Bill, he spotted a saferoom. In front was a dead animal, what used to be a cow. "Disgusting." I said when I walked past it and closed the door.
"YES!" a yell of victory from Zoey. Bill looked through the window of the exit-door. "Aw hell, there's nothing to see but woods." He opened the door and we almost crawled forward. Every few seconds a zombie jumped out of the trees. "Hey, look that barn over there. Maybe we find some supplies" said Louis. As we finally reached the barn, Zoey and me climbed up while the guys checked the lower floor. A bottle of pills was the only thing here. "We might need these." "Not me, I just need you." She kissed my cheek. "Same for me. Now c'mon, we should get down before the guys think, we're doing it up here" and she jumped out of a window. She turned around and pointed at a building. "There are the rails." "Finally" sighted Louis. We went there and the building turned out to be a warehouse. Some weapons were lying around and in the used-to-be breaking-room. I switched my weapon to the M14. From the right we were able to hear a Hunter. Bill aimed, shoot – and hit the car right behind the Hunter. The alarm went off. "Bull-frickin-horseshit" he swore. We climbed on a train cart, the Horde just came right after. Because both, Zoey and me, got a M14, we couldn't do that much and were more or less passively defending and wiped out big groups in a distance. Two or three minutes later, everything was over. Instead to climb down again, we followed the carts themselves. Ahead were the rails blocked again. The building next to it – probably used to be a train station – wasn't locked off and it could be entered easily. We went in the cellar – and saw something indescribable disgusting. Zoey made the only comment, but that was everything we needed to say. "Holy mother of god..." The beans of yesterday came back as I looked at the giant puddle of blood and the giblets of one or several infected next to the blood soaked lawn-mower. Before I was going to vomit, I rushed up the stairs into the second floor. I catched fresh air at the open window. Zoey came to me and put an arm over my shoulders. "Gee... good god... I can take a lot but THAT was too much for me." "It's okay... it was bad down there." She climbed through the window and was standing on a Marquise of the station. The guys climbed also through the window and I took a deep breath before I followed them. On the right, the rails continued as a bridge. Because of the fog, we couldn't say how long that bridge really was. After a few meters, we spotted another caboose, what blocked the whole bridge but got a door to enter – but a Witch was sitting in front of it. "Damn, a Witch." "I've got an idea about that, Louis. Zoey, I need your help" I said. "Sure, what do I need to do?" "Aim at the Witch and as soon as she stumbles, shoot the hell out of her. If it fails, you need to support us, Francis." He just looked a bit confused. "You're sure it will work?" "Nope."
Zoey and me crouched, I aimed carefully and pulled the trigger. A perfect headshot! The Witch screamed and was stumbling backwards, we instantly started to shoot everything we had. Even before the Witch regained consciousness, she died. "Sweet!" Zoey was happy. "I don't want to crash your party, but... we got company" said Bill and pointed behind us: A Horde was coming from there. We ran into the caboose, what really was a saferoom and jumped inside. Louis closed the door.
"Almost there, almost there!" Zoey was really jumpy right now. "Calm down, Zoey. We don't know how far way that outpost is still" meant Bill. I put down the M14 and took a M16 instead. "We just find out when we go on" said Francis, opened the door and jumped out. There were some Zombies out here, which Zoey lightened of their heads one by one. "Girl, you sometimes scare the shit outta me" said Francis with a grin when Zoey was done. We followed the rails and passed a derailed train with three train carts. Between two of them I spotted something red. "Wait a second." I climbed between those carts and found a gas can, which I tossed back to the group. "Catch!" Then I returned, took the can in my left hand and drew a Pistol with my right one. But I put it back when I saw that we got once again blocked rails and a turned train cart in front of us. But it wasn't that bad because we need to get to the upper left anyway – and the cart was placed for that just right. "At last, the outpost" said Bill and Zoey grinned cheeky. Somehow she knew it. We got on the train cart and followed the path in front of us. After a turn to the right, we were at a small cliff and a giant cornfield. Right next to us was a warning-sign of the military. "The honest to God military!" said Bill. Francis laughed shortly and then meant "Shit. Never thought I'd go looking for soldiers." I dropped the gas can and we jumped one by one. First Francis, then Bill followed by Louis, then me. "Shall I catch ya?" I asked Zoey, who was the last one up. As an answer I got a laughter and she landed next to me. But the laughter suddenly stopped when out of nowhere crows raise from the field we just entered. "They're coming!" shouted Louis. I turned around and saw the gas can, still in the line of fire. "Zoey, up there!" I yelled to her and she instantly understood, aimed carefully and shot the can. The fire swallowed most of the zombies heading towards us, the rest was no problem at all. The field itself made more problems, all the time some stupid plant hit my face. Still we could leave the field. From the farmhouse we could hear a voice: "This is an emergency broadcast from the American Safety Zone. Please respond." We rushed into the house and found a radio, first-aid-kits, ammo and a shitload of weapons. Francis seemed to be a bit disappointed. "You got to be shittin me.  We walk a hundred miles, fight 5 million vampires..." "THEY ARE ZOMBIES, FRANCIS!" we yelled all four simultaneously. "Whatever. And that's all they got? Screw the goddamn army! Goddamn tape loop piece of shit." "Just use the radio, Francis, they'll come." "Yeah yeah, all right." Francis pressed the button. "Aaaaaaaattention Army! This is... the cops." The Soldier at the other end sounded pretty surprised. "Jesus Christ. Captain, we got survivors. They say they're cops! We read you loud and clear, survivors! We are prepping an extraction team. Prepare yourselves and radio back when you're ready." I sighted once. "There we go again. Let's see what we got here. Split as usual?" Bill nodded. "You and Zoey, you two gonna check that barn over there. We control that farmhouse here."
In the barn, we found ammunition and pills. "What do you think, shall we stay here?" I asked Zoey. "And do what? Oh, right. The zombies just can come from that hole over there or from the ladder. Wait a sec." She piped once loudly and the guys came over. "Stay here? Well, why not?" meant Louis after we explained the plan. "Volunteers to go over and give the signal?" I raise my hand. "Oh no, my dear. YOU stay here with me." "Hey, I won't die on that short way" I said and jumped out of the window. The soldier was still waiting for a signal. "We're ready, soldier. Get us outta here!" "Copy that, survivors. It'll take us a good ten minutes to reach you. Dig in and hold on, you got me?" "Hurry up, we don't want to die on this hell on earth." With those words, I left the radio and ran back to the barn. "Okay, they're coming! Hang on." We set down in a corner, what was covered fine by straw-balls and walls, the ammo was in reach. Everything was just as planned: The infected tried to get through the hole on the other side and got stopped by Francis and Bill. Or they tried to get over the edge and send straight to hell by Louis or me. Meanwhile Zoey covered the ladder, where Smoker, Boomer and Hunter tried to get up. No problems at any time. As the Tank arrived, we looked out of a oversized window. Suddenly a Smoker appeared from below and dragged Louis outside. Yet Bill could free him before he hit the ground. Instead, Louis could the the Tank. "Back there, to your left!" And really: The Tank just appeared between the trees on our left. We still got a molotov left, so we ignited the Tank. It burned out. Louis was back in our group. The next Horde arrived. "God, where are they?" asked Zoey. During the Horde nothing happened because we were at the same position as the previous Horde and the zombies were as stupid as the previous ones and all died before we were in their range.
After a few minutes, we heard the growling of a Tank. We were about to look through the window when I suddenly flew out of the same: The Tank was already there. I landed on the roof of the veranda of the farmhouse. "Ouch. Okay, that asshole wants trouble? He can have it." I left the roof, ran inside the farmhouse to the weapons and grabbed an automatic shotgun. "Now I am getting serious." I returned back outside and saw that the Tank send out the others, too and I almost crashed into Francis. Together, we perforated the back of the Tank, what seemed to be interested at Zoey. "Leave her alone, you sucker!" I yelled. Zoey was in danger and that made me raging. And out of the sudden, it turned around – it seemed, now WE made IT raging. But it just began to rip a rock out of the ground, it died. "Quick, back up!" shouted Bill. Upside, we heard an engine. "The truck is here!" said Zoey. "I love the army!" came from Francis when he spotted the APC. We were all at the window and signalized the driver to stop in front of the barn. He did it, opened the backside and we jumped down – Zoey quickly tossed a pipe-bomb to distract the Horde a bit longer. Then she also entered the APC and Francis hit the cockpit to signalize the driver to move on. The APC closed and we were finally safe. The driver sped up, crashed through a fence and drove toward the sunrise.
"It's finally over..." said Louis.
