I'm planning on writing a comprehensive analysis on the trilogy, the only thing stopping me is naysayers that think positive reviews of the film are "based on emotion, not logic" will reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee all over it instead of listening to a differing opinion.
I've skimmed through those critiques, inluding Ethan's (I'm a fast reader). I understand each point they raise, and respect them, but I simply disagree with what they say.
My analysis would be long as all hell, so I'm not going to go into it here. I'm waiting for THW to arrive to my house first so I can watch all three, as well as RoB/DoB and GotNF.

I don't see the flaws the discord sees. That's my issue, what one person sees as flaws, others see as strengths. For example:
* I love that the dragons leave in the end. It shows that no matter how hard one fights, sometimes it just isn't enough. I also would argue that it's Berk's full acceptance of "the Other." One of the major themes of HTTYD for me is fear of the Other. Berk finally accepts the dragons for who they are, and embraces them fully to the point where they are both assimilated but also can exist apart. This is further shown by the short about New Berk, where we see that while the Berkians left their friends go, they still hold them close and see them as part of their culture instead of masking that they ever associated with them.
* I think that Toothless discovering his wild side again is fantastic and links back to themes of nature/nurture and how you can never fully tame nature, something established in HTTYD2.
* As irritating as Snotlout is in THW, and he is by far the weakest aspect for me, his character makes sense. He's trying to impress Valka because she is new, unaware of his pitfalls and insecurities, and is patient and kind. He is clueless at social interaction, so his way of garnering respect is to be a fuck boy. All he wants is verification. It's most likely that he dropped the whole Valka thing at the end of the film after she soothed his ego.
* Tuff's pep-talks are a direct parallel to "you just gestured to all of me." He is deliberately tearing Hiccup down in an effort to build him up, but is shit at it. Look at Hiccup's facial animation in these scenes, his eyes, his brows. He believes everything that Tuff is saying, it's cementing his fears. It's not until he finally listens to praise from Astrid, who doesn't dish compliments out lightly, that he says "now THAT'S marriage material!" Hiccup needed to be shot down before he could finally accept the truth about himself. It's pretty much ERP from an idiot.

It's not necessarily the artist's and writer's fault, much more likely the movie came out so rushed and poorly written because of executive pressure. Good visuals and emotional scenes sell, but innovative stories do not. DreamWorks has also been trying to make movies that "appeal to younger children" (source ), which completely misses the reason for their success in the first place. Let me reiterate, the animators, the VFX artists, the 3D modellers and the concept artists are not at fault here, the issues with the movie most likely stem from the fact that it was rushed and they only had one year to finish, as well as executive pressure to simplify the plot, which led to disregarding all the principles of good movie creation just to make a quick buck.
Also, could you provide any kind of logical backing to the articles Miza linked being "vile, badly informed, pseudo-academic diatribes?" I believe people should consume media while being able to deeply analyze it and look beyond the surface value of it, to understand whether it's actually worth watching and not be led blindly by movie studios realizing they can just repeat the same things again and again while still making money.

I'm not sure how I should respond to you. On the one hand, you are disappointed by a movie you expected to like, and everything you say might be very powerfully charged by that, trying to make sense of it. On the other, and I'm not trying to be mean to you, this is a lot of misinformation and conjecture. I'm not sure if it's an extension of that, or just an honest misunderstanding of the workings of film production.
Okay, keeping it short because this is not formal nor should it be.
"Vile" because they hold to an unpleasant tempter. Being unreasonably rude toward the crew by advancing their every intent as having been in bad interest and poor effort to such an extreme is nasty.
"Badly informed" because things like "not enough time", "the writers were lazy", "nobody tried", interpreting the situation at DreamWorks as being what they want it to have been, and vehemently taking every possible element and twisting it into the worst possible version of itself is bad info.
"Pseudo-academic" is what it is. Formatted like an essay, categorised, presented in a "logical" format, but nevertheless imbued with emotional charge, contempt, foul language and written in the interest of deconstruction without substance.
"Diatribe" because it's a diatribe.

Badly informed - calling the situation at DreamWorks as some kind of contributing factor (assumed from a limited scope and pure guesswork), calling into doubt the composer's efforts, the crew's efforts, poking holes in things previously left unpoked. The endless conjecture is bad info. Long and detailed =/= well argued. They come from a very pointed mindset and I could never consider that balanced, sorry.

But... what makes these people's opinions "right"? Nothing. You latch onto them because you agree with what they say, not because they're correct. Then what's the point of having competitions and contests for any art form? Whether it be dance, music, art, or film there are always certain ground rules that constitute whether something is good or not. In filmmaking, for example, an inconsistent and flawed flow of logic is something that is objectively bad because it is crucial to the understanding of the medium.

There are basic ground rules and elements within storytelling that *can* be quantified and factually described. Tone, pace, consistency, character development (or lack or regression of). Logic, reason, what tricks the author used among many other things. Such things can be looked at and analyzed objectively. Your own enjoyment can not. What you get out of the story is entirely subjective and varies between each person. How well-written that story is by literary and storytelling standards is not.

Or, perhaps this weird cult-like disdain for the third film can just stay on reddit and on the discord? There's nothing wrong with hating the film, nor discussing such hate with like-minded people, but this kind of pushing is not unlike religious zealots yelling into microphones on street corners.
If people want to find critical analysis on THW, regardless of whether it's positive or negative, they can find it of their own accord. The fandom is already toxic enough without others spreading one sided opinions and trying to soften the blow by saying "it's ok if you disagree." "What DreamWorks actually delivered?" how presumptuous. What makes an opinion "right or wrong"? Nothing. Right and wrong opinions don't exist. Everyone perceives media differently. Allow people to do that and form their own opinion instead of touting your viewpoint as facts. It's because of people like this that I've come so close to leaving the fandom. For the record, this goes both ways, for both lovers and haters of THW.

I regretted all of my actions on the sub-reddit. My post was meant to show this. Pretty much everyone agreed, but repo posts a burn list of all my transgressions... and updated it numerous times. For no reason. On a post where I admitted my wrongdoings and said I wanted to do better, that we all could do better.
