Description
Ok, so by now, I imagine most of y’all now the situation with a certain artist(s) and the issue of people taking and reposting their art without their permission.
Over the years of joining the online art community, I’ve noticed an ongoing trend of popular artist’s work showing up on platforms that they themselves aren’t active on. I admit, at first I didn’t see the harm in stuff like this, mostly due to the fact that I just assumed the art could always be traced back to the source. But then, I started to notice, in some instances, the reposted art would have descriptions claiming that the poster was the original artist. And that’s just.. well… shitty.
As time went on, I noticed other offenses, like individuals not linking sources, or worse, attempting to SELL this artwork without the artist’s permission. In some cases, some of this stolen artwork would even end up on shirts in stores like Hot Topic, without any knowledge given to the original creator.
It was around this time I became aware of the purpose of watermarks, and why some artists are forced to obscure their work in order to prevent, or at least lessen the effect of, theft. I’ve seen this occur to artists I admire, and artists I know, and every time, its made my heart sink. I don’t think I have to explain how art theft is detrimental to artists and the art community in general, but in case some of y’all don’t know, art theft often takes away opportunities from artists to further their careers or can even drain their drive to create, as well as lessen the likelihood for them to interact with their fans. Its also blatant disrespect when the artist CLEARY puts in their post descriptions, or even ON THE ARTWORK the simple request to NOT REPOST.
Look, I know that most of y’all reading this don’t engage in this type of behavior, but for those who do, you really need to stop. You’re not only hurting artists, you’re hurting art consumers who enjoy seeing work from creators. And to everyone else, my hope is that you’ll call out this behavior when you see it. Most image hosting websites have a report/flag option you can click when you see artwork that doesn’t belong to someone.
I’m not naive, I know art will continue tone reposted and stolen, but my hope is that it’ll least decrease overtime to the point that its negative effects don’t harm content creators to the point of quitting. So please, stop it with rips and reposts. Godzilla would not approve.
Peace.
