Description
Took a shot at drawing Diamond in a different incarnation, for once! This design is for a roleplay I'm doing with him that's set in a medieval / high / D&D style fantasy setting. His background on that world is that he left home at a pretty young age and has basically been on the road since, making a living off of ferrying news and small supplies between towns and offering his services as a mage and chemist. His routes are pretty heavily determined by the places he needs to go to get the components to make himself anticonvulsants and pain meds. He's not thrilled with the lack of modern health care.

For the actual thread, one of the merchants he'd been trading with for several years is killed. Her daughter, Masha , is left without anyone to help her manage and learn about her own magic. And a young, very upset kid without control over her abilities isn't exactly the safest situation to leave standing, so Diamond agrees to try to mentor her.

Diamond looks a bit younger than I intended; I was kind of aiming for the 30-40 range. And I definitely messed up with the color of the scar tissue; it's something I'll need to practice, unless I decide to rule that the curse that keeps said scar around also makes it just slightly irritated for eternity. xD But other than that, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

I'm still trying to practice shifting my work flow just slightly away from fussing over quality and into producing a higher quantity of finished work. So this was one of those pieces where I tried to just forge ahead whenever possible, but still take it all the way to a colored, shaded digital image. (It's also more beard practice, because I've been trying to learn how to draw them recently. ) There are any number of mistakes that I can see--his beard isn't centered quite right, for example--but I'm not letting myself go back to endlessly fix things.

Next up: working at least a simple background into more of my drawings! Rather than what I generally do, which is build up this huge mental wall where I feel like backgrounds have to be either complete and polished and well-composed, or next-to-nonexistent like this one. :')
