Description
Last night I was awakenedBy the sound of my own snoring
And in the confusion
Of not-quite consciousness
I rolled over to push you away
Your warm body nestled into mine
Lips parted in slumber,
Your breathing tickling my neck
I quietly swore as I stretched out my arm
To shake you, make you stop
So I could sleep in peace
The last few hours until sunrise
I found only the emptiness of a large bed
The chill of sheets unwarmed by the sleeper
An empty place where you should be
I cannot sleep now
It was hopeless to try
The moment my ears were opened
To the stillness of the falling rain
And the lack of the sound
Of your even breathing
I left the bed in empty vastness
Unable to bear it anymore
Things were easier when I slept in a small bed
Where there was only enough room for me
And I didn't have to look at the empty space
As I tried to fall asleep alone
And if I rolled over I would find
Only the cold wall to meet me
Not the empty expectation of finding you
You're a terrible thing to miss
And there's nothing I can do
Except sit alone
With my coffee cup empty
Like the bed I have left
Like the place in my soul reserved for you
