Description
The things that fall on my heartHave been piling up all year.
In the dead of winter I found some sun
And basked in its light,
But such warmth was not found without sorrow
And a stone was laid as a corner of a foundation
Atop my beating heart.
Later, I found a crack in a stone I thought could never break
And felt myself shaken to the core
When another stone was set next to the first
My heart began to labor at its work.
Then the owner of the first stone decided she wanted it back
But you can't reclaim what has been freely given
And in the place she had in my heart
Was set a boulder.
And now two new pebbles have been dropped from the greatest height
To fall on the stones which beset me.
I watch them fall with a growing fear
That when they hit me
My beating heart will simply collapse
And I will die under the weight of my burdens.
