Description
My brother's impish smileChin turned up, lips curled in
Eyes squinting, pushing his glasses
Up on that button nose
It tells me that he's happy
I miss that expression
Dad gives me the same smile
As he slowly cuts vegetables for tonight's dinner
Bending over stiffly
At an obtuse angle from the hip
His back hurts, but he smiles anyway
I miss that attitude
Mom shrugs her shoulders
Pushing an arm forward
Gesturing with a hand to say
"That's just what happened"
As she tells her story of the day
I miss that movement
The cat jumps to my desk
Dainty and skittish, the rude little bugger
He bumps my chin with his head
I stop what I'm working on
He wants to show me that I love him
I miss that interruption
She prepares for the day,
Tired, yawning herself awake
Throwing on clothes laid out last night
She always looks good and denies it
She leaves and secures the door behind her
I miss that routine
Insignificant moments, taken for granted
Never really considered until they're gone
Absence makes fonder, that old bag
They're never lost until recalled
All the things that make a home
Now I miss what I forgot I lost
