Description
I am a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I am a princely pup, descended from only the best of blood and breeding. I like to work in the show ring, following my handler wherever he wants me to go and impressing the judges with my ruby coat. I shine like a real ruby does and they always admire me, as they should, though I do not always win. But that's okay. My Handler still gives me treats because I am so good at what I do. My Handler also gives kisses to my Master, whether we win or lose. I like it when that happens because my Master is always so happy when that happens. I can smell it on her neck and hear it in her voice when she calls me "Little Liscious."I love my Master more than anything. She feeds me, and pets me all the time, and we go for walks to visit other dogs, which is so fun. But I'm a Cavalier and that makes me special because I'm the only one at the dog park. I love to run and play with the other dogs. I'm smaller than a lot of them, so they run faster. But my Master throws my special ball and that's only mine. They can't have it. We like to play "Catch and Run." My Master throws the ball as far as she can and we both run after it. I always get there first. She keeps telling me to bring it back, but I never listen. I run so she'll chase me. That's a lot of fun.
When we're not at the dog park, she takes me to visit the kids at the hospital. I get really excited when she says we're going there. The kids are so fun and so happy. Some of them smell sick, so I'm real quiet for them. I let them pet my shiny coat and I give them sweet kisses to make them better. The other kids like to throw toys for me and we'll play "Catch and Run," too. But they get tired faster than my master does. I like to go to the hospital. I get treats from all the kids and lots of kisses and pets for my shiny, ruby coat.
At night, my Master and I eat dinner together. I have my bowl on the floor where food should be. My Master likes to eat at the table, but sometimes she'll sit on the floor with me. She never shares even though I ask nicely for some of her food. It smells so good. I'm sure it tastes even better. Still, she never gives me a taste, unless it falls on the floor by accident. For some reason, she won't eat off the floor. I really don't understand it. After dinner, we watch TV. She sits on the couch. I like to curl up on her lap. Most of the time, though, she works on the computer. Then I have to settle for sleeping on her feet. I keep them warm for her. I get a treat at bedtime and then we go to sleep. She sleeps under the covers. I sleep on her legs so she won't go anywhere in the night. You would be surprised how often she tries to escape when she thinks I'm asleep. I always catch her. She'll stand at the door and tell me to go back to bed. I never do. I'm always awake when she gets back, too. Well, almost always. I have to sleep sometimes.
Every once in a while, my Handler comes over and spends the night. They sleep together then and there's not much room for me in the bed. But my Handler always brings her dog with her. He's a Cavalier like me, but he's older than I am. We play in the back yard together and when it's bedtime, we sleep in the special dog bed together. I still keep an eye on my Master, though. That's my job and I'm good at it.
None of this happened today, though. My Handler drove me to a show this morning. I was excited to work and I jumped up and down to tell him how happy I was. But he only gave me a small pat on the head and put the harness on. I stood by the door, waiting for him to take me out. My Master had just gotten out of the shower. She and my Handler stood near me, but something wasn't right. Neither of them smelled right. I thought they were going to fight for a second, but my Handler backed down first. We went out the door then.
At the show, I pranced around the ring. I was gorgeous and I worked hard. The judge loved me. She gave me a treat and petted my soft, ruby coat. She gave me a ribbon. My Handler was so happy. It was a really good thing to win this. She said something about going on to be a champion. I was more excited about treats. I leapt into my Master's arms and gave her kisses all over her face. I knew I had made her happy, but her eyes tasted salty. Tears? Why was she crying if she was happy? My Handler stood awkwardly next to her. There were no kisses for them this time. They shook hands and my Handler walked away. She went over to a different woman and kissed her instead. My Master smelled sad. I licked away more tears as we left.
That night was quiet. We ate. I still didn't get any treats. After dinner, we watched TV. She was still sad. I crawled up into her empty lap. She started to sob. All I could do was kiss her and try to make her feel better. We went to bed early. I slept on her legs again so she couldn't get away. Hopefully, she will feel better in the morning. My kisses can make anyone feel better.
I am a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I am royalty. And more than anything in the world, I love my Master, who feeds me and loves me. I will always be there to love her when she's unhappy. We are best friends and we always will be.
