Description
EXT. CRASH SITE: GRAVEYARDStephan and the Professor check the ground again. Stephan walks around it, kneels beside it to look closer, and stands up again, still walking around it.
STEPHAN
We can tell our footprints from the others. The only thing that might matter is my boots, but my feet are bigger than Peters. Peter's prints are pretty distinct, but not his attackers. See.
PROFESSOR
They're all pretty mucked up, I'd say.
STEPHAN
All except this one.
He kneels down next to a large slide. At the end of the slide is half a footprint with marking identical to the army boots.
PROFESSOR
What does this mean?
STEPHAN
It means we were set up. We need to get back to Torchwood right now.
They start running for the jeep.
INT. TORCHWOOD FRONT OFFICE
At about the same time, Evie is sitting at her desk in Torchwood, pretending to read a book. She slams the book closed, having made up her mind. She walks out of the room towards the surgery. Nobs is just coming out of the surgery, carrying samples.
EVIE
Are you done with him yet?
NOBS
Just finished.
EVIE
I'll take him to the cells.
NOBS
I was gonna do that.
EVIE
No worries.
She goes through the door.
INT. SURGERY
Evie comes in. Peter is sitting on the table.
PETER
(wryly)
Come to take me away?
EVIE
What do you think?
PETER
I think you can make your own decisions.
EVIE
Come on.
Peter stands up and follows her out.
INT. TORCHWOOD FRONT OFFICE
She leads him into the front office.
PETER
Why are you doing this?
EVIE
I believe you're innocent until proven guilty. Captain Broom can choke on his suspicion for all I care.
PETER
(laughing)
He always was suspicious.
Evie sits down at her desk. Peter comes over and leans over her shoulder. Evie notices that he's really close. It makes her self conscious.
PETER
Is that the thing?
EVIE
The hopscotch. Its what we got your message on.
PETER
That's how you knew to save me.
Peter looks into Evie's eyes. She blushes.
PETER
(sincerely)
I do appreciate it, you know.
EVIE
It was our pleasure.
PETER
(regretfully)
And I really like you, Evie. But that only makes what I have to do now harder.
EVIE
What-
Peter chops her neck, knocking her out. He catches her, laying her down gently on the floor. He brushes her face with his fingertips. Then he takes the hopscotch and wrenches it away from the desk, which makes a loud noise, disconnecting it. He puts it under one arm. Nobs comes in.
NOBS
What are you doing?
Peter drops the hopscotch and lunges at him. Nobs avoids him, and tries to punch him, but Peter blocks it. He punches Nobs in the stomach, making him bend over, then brings his fists down on his back, knocking him out. Peter picks up the hopscotch and goes to the door. He looks back for just a second.
PETER
I'm sorry.
Then he goes out.
INT. TORCHWOOD FRONT OFFICE - LATER
Stephan and the Professor rush in. They look around. Stephan goes straight to Evie, pulling her upright, an arm wrapped around her shoulders. He checks her pulse.
STEPHAN
(relieved)
Still alive.
PROFESSOR
(kneeling over Nobs)
Nobs, too.
Stephan holds Evie's head up, patting her cheeks. She starts to come around.
EVIE
(groggily)
Peter?
STEPHAN
Evie, are you alright?
EVIE
(opening her eyes, slowly)
My head hurts.
STEPHAN
What happened?
EVIE
(coming to fully)
Peter. He was in here. He hit me.
STEPHAN
He was in here?
EVIE
I brought him in. I didn't think he deserved the cells. He took the hopscotch. Oh, Stephan, you were right.
STEPHAN
(gently)
That doesn't matter now. Did you see where he went?
EVIE
(distraught)
No. He knocked me out. Oh, Stephan, you were right. I'm so sorry. You were right.
She starts sobbing. Stephan's face is set, but he feels sorry for her. He holds her while she cries.
STEPHAN
That doesn't matter now. It's okay.
He rocks her gently. The Professor helps Nobs sit up.
Nobs
(groggily)
What happened?
PROFESSOR
You took a nasty blow to the head.
NOBS
Evie?
STEPHAN
She's alright. Peter got away.
NOBS
Well now what do we do?
STEPHAN
(grimly)
I don't know.
int. hanger - later
Peter limps into the hanger. The remnants of the ship that crashed are suspended from the ceiling. A ladder leading into the cockpit hangs from the side. As he comes in, a figure dressed in a space suit walks out from behind the ship, a hand running along its body. There's a scratching sound of metal on metal.
the suit
(the voice is mechanical)
Did you get it?
PETER
I got it.
Peter hands it over. The figure in the suit caresses the hopscotch. The figure is wearing a space suit made of an iridescent material. The fingers on the suit are long, pointed, and made of metal. They have joints in them.
THE SUIT
Excellent.
PETER
Will you do it now? Will you fix me?
the suit
It's already done.
Peter tilts his head back, his eyes closed in relief.
PETER
Thank God.
THE SUIT
But you can't go yet. The process isn't complete and I still need you to do one more thing.
PETER
What?
THE SUIT
Blow up Torchwood. Destroy it permanently.
PETER
But-
THE SUIT
(no emotion)
Do you want me to let you die? Or do you want to see your family again?
PETER
(protesting quickly)
No. I'll do it.
THE SUIT
Good. Go set the explosives. I'll let you know when its time.
PETER
But then I can go?
THE SUIT
Yes. Then you can go.
Peter nods and starts limping out. The figure in the suit holds the hopscotch in one hand, stroking the ship with the other.
THE SUIT
Soon, Ai-ia. I will return soon.
