Description
ext. crash site: Graveyard - laterNobs is driving. They pull up in fron tof the graveyard, the rain just drizzling now. Stephan steps out and slicks back his hair so he can see. The Professor and Nobs are right behind him. There's nothing to see. The graveyard is deserted.
STEPHAN
This is it?
NOBS
(pointing)
Yeah, over there. It was only part of a ship, little more than debris, but it was the front part where the cockpit was.
STEPHAN
Show me.
Nobs leads the way. There is a substantial hole off to one side of the cemetery. Remains and pieces of coffins have been thrown to the side. There is no sign of a ship.
STEPHAN
You took the ship back to Torchwood?
NOBS
Yeah. Didn't want people getting a good look at it, you know.
PROFESSOR
The parts of it are in a hangar for study.
STEPHAN
So, the question is, what was transmitting from this site if there's nothing here?
PROFESSOR
(a few feet away)
Look at this.
Stephan and Nobs come over to look. On the ground are a myriad of footprints and drag marks, as well as blood on the wall. Stephan bends down to look at the footprints more closely.
NOBS
There was a struggle.
PROFESSOR
And whoever it was fought back. The spatter is consistent with a punch to the nose.
NOBS
(impressed)
Now ow would you know that?
PROFESSOR
I've been in a few fights in my time, young Nobby. Also I read about blood spatter patterns in a book. Its a fascinating science.
NOBS
Would you mind loaning that book to me?
PROFESSOR
Of course, if you're interested.
STEPHAN
(interrupting)
These are army issue boots.
PROFESSOR
Really? How do you know?
STEPHAN
(standing)
Because I'm wearing the exact same boots.
Nobs and the Professor look quickly down at his feet. Stephan goes to the wall and pulls himself up to look over it. He hoists himself up further until he's standing on the wall itself.
NOBS
(nervously)
Careful.
STEPHAN
(pointing and walking)
There are tracks going along the edge of the wall. They go back around to the front.
He follows them on the wall, jumping down again at the front of the cemetery. He follows them a little further. They disappear at the street. Nobs and the Professor are dismayed.
PROFESSOR
The rain's washed away the rest of the footprints. We'll never know where they went now.
Stephan is looking at the manhole cover. There is a streak of burnt rubber on it, but it doesn't line up with the rest of the mark on the street.
STEPHAN
They went down there.
He points out the mark to them.
NOBS
Well that makes sense.
STEPHAN
Help me get this off.
Nobs and Stephan pull it up and look down into the hole. There is blood on the ladder leading down.
STEPHAN
Okay. Let's go.
PROFESSOR
Uh, not without being properly armed, Captain.
The Professor goes over to the Jeep and picks up some guns. He gives one to Stephan who looks at it critically.
STEPHAN
This is a dart gun.
PROFESSOR
Tranquilizers, to be precise. We have to admit that the beings we sometimes deal with are out of their element and therefore volatile. They should be treated with care so we don't anger them further. Besides, we're not their executioners.
STEPHAN
One of these won't do any good against many creatures. A well aimed bullet works better.
PROFESSOR
But there's no reason to harm them
STEPHAN
They're going to harm me. Besides, we can always apologize later. Use these toys if you want, but I have more faith in my own weapon.
He hands the gun back and pulls out his pistol. He climbs down the ladder first.
NOBS
(to the Professor)
Evie said he was like this. Stubborn and foolhardy. It seems to be a thing with soldiers.
PROFESSOR
Yes, most of you are. You were blessed with a sense of humor, which makes you unusual. This particular display, however, is that of a man who doesn't trust anybody but himself. That is peculiar to our good Captain.
STEPHAN
(from the hole)
Are you gonna stand there analyzing me or are you gonna come down?
PROFESSOR
Coming, Captain.
The Professor lets Nobs go down first, and then follows him.
int. sewer
Stephan is already a few steps down the sewer. The Professor drops down into the couple inches of water and other bits. Nobs looks down disgusted.
NOBS
Crap! My shoes.
PROFESSOR
Crap is precisely the word that applies here, lad.
STEPHAN
This is the only way they could have gone. Let's go.
NOBS
(to the Professor)
Funny how we always end up in tunnels, isn't it?
