Description
int. stephan's house: kitchen - morningStephan comes into the kitchen, barefoot and without a shirt on, drying his hair with a towel. He is a very gaunt man, all muscle and no body fat. He has some scars, including a prominent one on his abdomen, just below his left pectoral. his face is still scruffy, since he hasn't shaved yet. He goes over to the telephone, which is sitting on a writing table by the back door. He picks up the receiver and dials. The phone rings.
Oscar
(on the phone)
Supplies, this is Oscar.
STEPHAN
Hey, Oscar, its me.
OSCAR
Steve. Long time no see, Captain. We were wondering if Gerry finally got you.
STEPHAN
No, I've just retired.
OSCAR
Retired? You lucky bastard.
STEPHAN
I sure am. Look, Oscar, I need a favor.
OSCAR
I've got a carton of cigarettes with your name on it, buddy.
STEPHAN
I need a bigger favor than that. I need enough food to feed seven and I need it today.
OSCAR
Seven? What are you planning on doing, feeding an army?
STEPHAN
Look, can you do it?
OSCAR
Well, sure, I can do it. Who do you think I am?
STEPHAN
Thanks. And keep it quiet, Oscar. I don't need anyone finding out about this.
OSCAR
Sure thing, Captain. Just like old times.
STEPHAN
You're the eighth wonder of the world, Oscar. I'll come around the usual time.
OSCAR
See you then, Captain.
Stephan hangs up. He turns around and sees Nancy watching him from the doorway. He nods, sheepishly, looking down at his bare chest.
NANCY
What was that all about?
STEPHAN
I'm picking up our food tonight.
NANCY
Oh. That's good.
STEPHAN
I thought so. Ready to work on breakfast?
NANCY
Sure. What are we making?
Stephan pulls ingredients out of the cupboard and hands them to her. They go over to the island and take stock.
STEPHAN
It looks like we're making Oatmeal peaches.
NANCY
How can you mix oatmeal and peaches?
Stephan starts fixing water for the oatmeal and measuring it out. Nancy stands next to him, watching.
STEPHAN
Very easily. You take the oatmeal, like this, and when its finished you pour some of the peach juice over it and add a couple peaches to the top with the last of our sugar. It tastes great. Trust me.
NANCY
Okay. I hope the children will like it.
STEPHAN
They will. Kids like anything sweet.
NANCY
(pointedly)
And are you actually staying for dinner today?
STEPHAN
(looking pointedly at her)
Yes.
Stephan's gaze forces her to look down and she sees his scar. She touches it gently. He jerks away.
NANCY
How did you get that?
STEPHAN
(bluntly)
I was shot.
NANCY
Did-
STEPHAN
(brusquely)
I don't want to talk about it.
He takes his towel and goes back upstairs.
