I imagine hellhounds to be the embodiment of a sinner’s crimes, endlessly “hounding” (heheh) and tormenting said sinner throughout their sentence.
If the sinner were ever to show true remorse for their actions they would be consumed by the hound, earning them some rest in the least.
In this case the sinner in question committed crimes of greed, gluttony, sloth, and wrath, thus condemning him to the hound ‘Coal Belly’, who would swallow the person whole and digest them in its ever-burning stomach if they were caught.
