Description
So, finally.I don't know what kept me from uploading it - but here it goes!
(And of course I know that this might disappoint some of you as this is something completely different to the usual stuff I'm doing - so I apologize)
This is our project of our Bachelor-Semester for Animation & Game.
It deals with a more or less abstract idea of global warming in which our heritage (a girl) has to deal with the consequences of our actions at our time (a melting city).
We chose an Asian setting, as Asian countries are developing very fast - but most of them are not aware what they might leave for their future generations.
(I probably know what I'm talking about - I am an Asian)
(My opinion to the core idea : I'm not really satisfied as I think that the ending could be different - especially the final message...there could be so much more, I think. But instead it was kept simple and for that case I was outvoted)
We had about one month to create and refine the core idea - and three months to create and visualize the project.
To be honest, we were an awesome team - each of us is specialized in certain fields and we were working together for about 12 hours daily over the whole semester - and of course we are all very good friends.
This might be just an idea - but we want to establish an own small animation studio when we all collected some experience from the industry, first.
Anyway, we all really hope you'll like it and leave some feedback here (technical, conceptual, whatever you like)
Probably no one will see this anyway, because it's a film and...so on.
A project, created by :
"Lukas G." - Concept, Modeling, Shading, Hair , Visual FX, Compositing
"Oliver M." - Concept, Char. Modeling, Cloth Simulation, Rigging, Animation, Pipeline
"Alex R." - Concept, Modeling, Env. Shading, Animation, Music, Sound, Editing
"Hieu N." - Concept Arts, Modeling, Texturing, Shading, Lighting, Rendering, Ocean
Tools Used : Maya, Blender, ZBrush, Mari, Mudbox, ProTools, Houdini
Working Pipeline :
Modeling inside Maya and Blender
Sculpting and Texturing inside ZBrush, Mari, Mudbox and Paint Tool SAI
Rendering, Shading, Lighting, VFX inside Houdini
Sounds and Music inside ProTools 10
Rendered with Mantra (Houdini)
FYI : This won't be my only submission regarding to film...there's something else I will upload (but it will take some time).

It would be great! I think it can move people, at least evoke them things. The child running in the streets, it's so common.

Extremely well done, congratulations!!
That said, I have only two criticisms. Animation of the girl's figure was very well done, but not quite perfect. At certain moments, it is a little stiff.
The scenario is probably not realistic, but that is forgivable in the name of dramatic exaggeration. In a world so hot that things melt as shown here, the girl would have died long before. Sea level would rise, but not so fast. Etc.
On a deeper level, the scientific basis for the expectation of disastrous warming is questionable. The warming observed over the past century is only a very minor uptick embedded in a major cooling trend that has been going on for at least 7,000 years, with interruptions at the time of certain major times of prosperity, such as the Medieval Warming in Europe. In another 1,500 years or so, the next Glacial Age is expected to overtake us.

Thank you for your excellent feedback! I absolutely appreciate it and I'm sure my team also will!
For the animation-part, you're mostly right. Our animator did his best to create believable movement within our project time, but it was really a lot to do and during the limited time span (we had three months to create it, from the three months he had only 1 month to make it as good as possible) he had to animate 22 shots, each with it's own speed, acceleration, interaction and so on and so forth. Of course there are shots in which it doesn't look as good as others, but we still appreciate his work, that he managed to do it almost all alone and in such a high quality.
Exactly, we just did it to give the visual look a more dramatic outcome. It would be very strange if this really happened and people would still be alive.
And of course, you're absolutely right with your thoughts that it might be questionable. Of course the main message is dealing with global warming and it's possible consequences, which is not scientifically approved at all bases. We are also fully aware of that. But to my (and my teams) honest opinion, I personally think that the message is more about changing the actual lifestyle and act more responsible to the world in order to not leave a wasted world to our future generations. The idea, that our future generation might deal with everything too hot and all around them is melting away due to our irresponsible acts might be one scenario. Another scenario could be mountains of plastic trash that our heritage has to live on. Who knows? But I think you get our idea at some point.
Anyway, thank you again so much for your kind feedback!

Yes, indeed, I did indeed understand completely, and you are to be congratulated on a masterful work!!
I have my own opinions about the solution to the problem of how we are changing the world, and my idea of the best future course is probably not one that most people would agree with. I think the answer lies with advances in technology that we can scarcely imagine now. Some will say that betrays my background as an engineer -- OF COURSE I would think that would be the nature of the solution. But I think that what we call the "Industrial Revolution" has not really run its course. When we have REALLY advanced technology, most of the machines and structures and systems we rely on now will turn out to be completely unnecessary. We will abandon our big cities and factories and farms and global commerce, and go back to living in villages, but villages that are completely different from the ones our ancestors had. They will be based on technology that uses vastly less energy and meets our needs much more directly, and requires almost no physical labor on our part, but does require that we manage it.

Interesting. I like it. How did you create the melting effects? Can they be "calculated" by some program, or did you have to model them yourself?

Thank you, I appreciate your words!
Well, in the end it became something of both. Indeed it can be calculated within many 3D-Applications, such as Maya, Max, Houdini or Softimage.
The actual whole process was done in Houdini, but as the melting-calculations we quite heavy and did require a lot of RAM, we only created them for the most important parts (such as the can, the traffic light-box and the stairs). For the rest we did model them and moved them with vertex-deformations (blend shapes, morph targets if you're familiar with that).

Well, look here : help.deviantart.com/830/
It's pretty simple, you have to upload an (self-created, non copyrighted in terms of music or footage) video, which has to be approved.
And after uploading, you have to play the wait-game.
