Celestia and Luna are different from the other alicorns of Equestria, rather than having been assisted in becoming an alicorn, they naturally became alicorns, by a phase of life that other ponies don’t go through. This phase is similar to getting your cutiemark, except it is their way of transitioning into an adult rather than finding their purpose. When they were called by the elders of their homeland to help a struggling Equestria, they left their home to help lead Equestria to a better future. Their goal was to stay until the Equestrian ponies could find a fitting leader and Luna and Celestia could return home, however seeing them as their saviours, the ponies appointed them as their rulers. With much hesitation, they ended up staying, hoping to find a leader to replace them, which is when they met their mentor, Star Swirl the bearded. Celestia and Luna saw him as a righteous and powerful king and wished for him to become the ruler, however he didn’t desire the power of a ruler, in fact he wished, rather, to continue his studies in peace, which he had stopped because of the chaos in Equestria. With the princesses now at a lost with no other favorable candidates for the position as leader in Equestria, they took it upon themselves to rule Equestria peacefully together, balancing between the night and day. After years of ruling peacefully, they were notified that their homeland had been destroyed by the Storm King. After being notified they vowed to find the Storm King and imprison him, however he went missing after destroying their village.

Until the present, when both Celestia and Luna’s lives had been threatened by various villains, they hadn’t thought about a future heir, and so, they decided that to preserve their homeland’s purity as “true alicorns” and being the only ones alive, they would use their own DNA to produce an heir within a lab. Of course, they had no romantic feelings towards each other, but they thought it was beneficial to keep their pure lineage, thus creating Eclipse (a term that describes the sun and the moon coming together as one).

Eclipse was raised from the womb to be perfect, and thus was expected to always be perfect and not throw tantrums like typical fillies. She is to never show weakness and always be a beacon of hope to her people. In the future, when her parents die, she will have full control of both the night and the day and will have to be able to control her energy so she can be able to raise the sun and moon and carry out her duties as a royal within a day. She was trained to be able to raise both the sun and the moon, in case of the absence of one or both of the sisters, making her more powerful than both of her parents. Eclipse was also born with a genetic mutation, her double set of wings, which was a result of a miscalculation while she was being created in the lab. Eclipse know that she was only created to rule over Equestria, however wishes to be a normal pony and not carry this type of burden on her shoulders.
