The PARE Directed Energy Gun Model 71 Side Arm, is based on research into the bomb pumped x-ray laser systems popular for orbital defense satellites. Using a much smaller, high energy containment vessel instead of a nuclear warhead to power the shots. The DEG-71 see's only limited issue as an anti-armor weapon due to its prohibitive cost, limited payload, comparatively short range (in relation to other anti-armor systems), potential volatility of its ammunition, and difficulty of maintenance. While extremely popular with troops it is issued to, due to its compact size, low comparative weight, ease of use, and extraordinary effectiveness. The payload is a tube magazine designed as an additional containment device to reinforce the limited stability provided by the individual "slugs" (a high energy crystal matrix composed of a radioactive substrate that when compressed, heated and then exposed to a specific series of electromagnetic fields results in a directed, catastrophic high order detonation in the sub-kiloton range). This description often inspires horror in those unfamiliar with PARE products. It should be noted that the Phobos Applied Research Engineering company was an... Unintended subsidiary of the renowned Phobos High Energy Research Facility. Due to the facilities prestige a number of quite talented engineers and machinists were hired on long term contracts at the isolated installation. They of course, had to be provided with the data from the research team to properly support them. The result was an isolated group of very talented if somewhat eccentric machinists and engineers with access to cutting edge physics research, top of the line technology, and very little outside oversight. The result is nuclear bomb handguns, and similarly ridiculous developments.
