Description And here's part two!

Those of you looking for more specific direction might like that one better.

These crazy things take me so damned long. Honestly, I've put a lot of hours into it, which is why it's so late.

I realize this is word-heavy. Sorry, but I didn't make this tutorial for people who don't like to read. There are already dozens of these on DA and you can find them by plugging 'poses' into the search bar. I felt the need to cover information that the others don't.

I thought I had a LOT more to say about this but I guess I don't. It might come back to me later. Apologies for spelling errors. I read over it about ten times and kept finding tiny little things so I'm sure there are still a few hiding here and there.

You can definitely fit a lot into that small space. :F

I study anatomy out of books, mostly, because finding a model is difficult.

It sounds to me like perhaps you've just not put enough hours in. I know this sounds like a cop-out answer but it really isn't. You HAVE to study a certain amount to even begin to understand what you might be doing wrong. When it comes to poses specifically, gesture drawing is going to help you the most. You don't worry about surface details and instead work on the pose and motion of the body.

go to www.posemaniacs.com and do the 30 second drawing a little bit every day. You'll find that errors in your own drawing will begin to become more obvious because you have more pose knowledge.

I forgot to mention that when you don't know what the heck you're doing, yourself, it's great to go to someone who does. A mentor.

I'll warn you, though, that DA isn't really the best place. There are a lot of genuine great artists here but also a lot of people who have no idea what they're talking about and you don't want to be mislead early on.

I find this vert useful and nonetheless INSPIRING! I will work on my flaws and not only draw what I'm bad at. What strikes me is that it feels pretty fun doing it as well, studying what you're bad at just aint that bad!
Thank you so much for this, well done. Now I will read part two.

very good.
i think i might just link to this in the description of all my own tutorials.
the thin about keeping practicing and drawing really A LOT is something many people have in their subconsciousness, but donΒ΄t really know.
it might become even clearer, if one would add some figures, like "If you think IΒ΄m good at this, itΒ΄s just because IΒ΄m drawing for 2 hours/ 10 hours, in which i create about humteen different figures EVERY. BLOOPING. DAY! So this makes 14 hours/ 50hours a week. Think about that."

Very well constructed tutorial. I like the fact that you didn't actually show us how to draw anything but gave us some support to help us draw anything... that make sense right?

Madmangamer364 [2013-01-18 03:14:29 +0000 UTC]

Pretty good tutorial. I think it's good that you were willing to break down both the technical and mental challenges that can come with creating poses in an easy-to-understand manner. Sometimes, a tutorial is just that much more helpful when you're able to digest what is being told beyond the examples.

The concept itself isn't unlike anything I've seen before, but the way you presented the entirety of the tutorial, from the purpose of thumbnails, to the self-critiquing/self-encouraging discipline that comes with developing better poses, still proves to be very useful. And like you said, it's easy to lose sight of the obvious at times, so it's great when something comes along that is aware of that fact.

In truth, I'm actually looking forward to part 2 now, as it seems like it'll be focused on more practical methods that will greatly compliment what was featured here. Personally speaking, I feel as though that is one tutorial I'll find extremely valuable, but for the moment, this one still manages to make a very nice impression.

I'm glad I took a moment to look at this. Well done!

Thanks for making this! I don't mind reading lots of text, so I found this very informative. I've fallen into this too, I'll avoid drawing things I'm bad at. I'm trying to force myself to draw all the things I dislike this year, that's my goal! I don't want to be one of those artists who never try to improve.

I just sat here and read this through, good ideas that I haven't heard much. I find a TON of other tutorials like you meantion but most have pictures and almost no words or advice to go with it, which is one reason I like yours. I can't wait for the second part of this tut, I think it'll help me improve!

Thank you for this. I have recently come to the realization that I need to totally re-learn how to draw...since my current ability is not at professional levels. This may come in handy when I'm trying to force myself to get better.

the three things I need work on are:

drawing speed. I can't stand gesture drawing, because it forces me to be faster, and yet that's what I need most right now, I think.

proportion, perspective, and forshortaning. I simply cannot forshortening. and it drives me crazy, and throws off my proportions. And perspective is a pain in the friggin backside. At least now I'm starting to actually notice it. I wished I'd had my camera when i was downtown, because I was seeing the perspective everywhere I went. (and it's too cold to sit outside and draw)

and the last one is...to break my bad habit of thinking that I need to get every single little sketch to a state of finished-ness. it really slows me down enormously.

Thank you!
The heavy-wordedness (is that a word?) was actually pretty helpful. Some people genuinely do learn by reading and understanding 'theory' before they go at the actual 'activity.' I'm one of those people, so this was some awesome information to have in mind on the outset of really getting into poses.
Now, per your advice, I'll be spending the next few hours drawing hands, feet and eyeballs...sigh. Practice makes perfect!
