Description
So I finally did a GITS fanart! Tried to put in more effort for this piece because this anime has influenced me hugely over the years.Overall I think it turned out well but I am sure the anatomy has some issues here and there.. might fix them up with the help of some feedback. I actually saved steps for this, might upload them some time.
Looked at pics for design accuracy, initially I wanted Motoko to look more like in the first movie (still my fave by far) but went with the SAC outfit then.
The gun is a Seburo C-X, sorry- no Tachikoma & folks in here..
Worked on this over 2 afternoons.
I will make a print available for this later!
Hope you enjoy and I could make some fans happy!
Ghost in the Shell (C) - Shirow Masamune
edit: Not sure if it's better now, but I made some changes for her pose/anatomy.

I LOVE GITS and Kusanagi.
The problem is with the right(for her) leg and hand's elbow. I can't feel the elbow, make more lines or make harder light and shadow to make it feel where it is.
The have the same feeling with the right (for her) ankle also. Take up a boot, crouch and look in to the mirror, and see how the heel lift up a bit, and the boot make a bend. Look into the mirror is the fastest way to check on it. And the right ham is too long.
Afterall it went out good. Mostly her head. She looks like Madonna.

I think the real problem with her legs (probably the only anatomy that is visibly "off" a bit) is the shading of the outstretched leg. That strong light line on her left side makes her left thigh look significantly smaller than her right, even allowing for a stretch verus straight. Then, the knee doesn't quite looking like it's bending, so it looks a little too stretched out (like, where does the thigh end-knee begin-then shin). When I did the pose myself on the ground, I found it difficult to balance having that left leg so extended and not bending a little more, without putting very bad pressure on my ankle.
/anatomy
My overall feeling from the piece was the power of her--she feels very competent, and like she really is shooting a gun into an enemy's face. The background is just incredible, and very well done in terms of lighting, architecture, and colors. I think you really captured Motoko spectacularly, and did a great job with translating the anime style of GitS into realism.

thanks a lot for the crits I made some changes now! Actually, in kung fu there is a very low stance similar to this one asking you to put down your foot completely flat on the ground - it's really hard to do. [link] But I guess, cyborgs like Motoko are meant to be highly flexible ;D
Glad you like the piece overall!

Yeah! That's almost exactly the stance I ended up doing (it's similar to one I know from doing mixed martial arts), and it was easy for me to do, but I come from a yoga/ballet background, so it was a lot easier for me to do it in front of mirror to say, "Okay, what's going on here?" And I'm pretty sure that Motoko would be able to do anything I could, and then some. XD
I do like some of these changes for sure--I feel like the line of how her leg is bracing her body is clearer, and that the sense of her knee bending for some support is better (though I'm now wondering if the knee pad is turned slightly too much). Though if you follow the new line of shadow created by the new bend, it gives an odd feeling with her foot (even if you look at examples where people totally have their foot turned exactly like that).
However, I do think that after a certain point, it's just a matter of nitpicking for perfection, when really you already have a great sense of art!

haha I see. I was about to almost do the stance myself and take a photo but I was too lazy. It would only have helped roughly anyway I think being a guy myself lol
Thanks for the crits, much appreciated! Trying my best!

Wow, that looks fantastic = easily one of the best GITS pieces I've seen here on deviantART! (I don't know why people are moaning about her legs though - they look perfectly proportioned for the dynamic pose she's in) Excellent work dude!

I watched that movie for the first time a few weeks ago, it was pretty average although the animation was spectacular. Does the story get better thorugh the sequels?

Hideyoshi In reply to CostumesbyCourtney [2011-04-09 18:10:59 +0000 UTC]
you mean you watched the series? Stand Alone Complex or Solid State Society? Or the movie from 1995? There is also GITS: Innocence from 2004...

CostumesbyCourtney In reply to Hideyoshi [2011-04-10 03:17:59 +0000 UTC]
The 1995 movie. I didn't really know where to begin, is that the first part of the franchise?
π: 0 β©: 1
Hideyoshi In reply to CostumesbyCourtney [2011-04-10 14:18:19 +0000 UTC]
yup, first part! I think it still holds up to this day. Especially the story is really complex and makes for good multiple viewing! If you didn't like this, you might enjoy Innocence even less... but the series might be your cup of tea.

Sweet! Cool, dynamic pose, and the rope adds even more dynamic - nice!
Just some tiny crits; her stretched leg looks a bit longer than the other i think... the gun is tilted a bit too much iΒ΄d say. The bg is more Hideyoshi than GitS, no ? But thatΒ΄s okay
But i really like the lighting, pose and overall composition!

i think that something is wrong with hear right leg. (on her right side not from viewers side
1. Her right butt cheak is insanely large when u compare it with left.
2. Right thigh is quite long. It looks like dislocated in hip. Knee looks like it would have 2 joints
3. Foot looks like it was it was broken in middle..
You requested feedback here you have it

Oh, how I love GITS!
Awesome job, Hideyoshi!
Only one thing bugs me though - the reflection on her lip. Somehow makes her expression... ugly.

thanks! lol, the light makes her ugly? ._. She's in combat here so naturally won't look super stunning I'd say lol *cough

MartinKlekner In reply to Hideyoshi [2011-04-09 18:37:57 +0000 UTC]
Well, not really ugly, its just the light reflecting on her upper lip. To me it looks like a big tooth sticking out of her mouth :-D Of course its just a matter of first sight...but still...
Dont get me wrong, its just my opinion.

imho fehlt die definition.. mit der rimline kΓΆnntest du noch mehr form andeuten beim bein bzw knie.. auch macht der dicke stiefel die shape uninteressanter

It is a great image, and I do wish I could draw half as well,
but something bothers me about the image, I am confused by the whippy rope like thing, it has no tension (if it is a cable and not a pipe) and yet she seems to be using to brace herself.
Of course I could be reading the image wrong :S
Sorry
