Description Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu on the difference of a victorious army and a defeated army. Sun served as a military commander and later as a military strategist in the state of Wu during the Warring States period in Chinese history where the state of Wu along with the states of Zhao, Qi, Qin, Chu, Han, Wei, and Yan fought over territory in what is now eastern China.

Sun saw preparations for battle as essential, that the army that had made necessary planning and preparations to ensure victory against the various threats posed to it prior to battle would not need to desperately struggle on the battlefield to attempt to gain victory. To hope that a battle can be won through battle alone without confidence in victory prior to entering the battle is dangerous in his opinion.

The Art of War has remained a book that has been used and studied by military commanders and military strategists in modern day warfare. In addition to military strategy, The Art of War has since become an influential book that has inspired political, business, and sports strategies.

Note: I am using the arrangement of text that is based upon the original Chinese text as shown in the Penguin Classics edition of The Art of War.

I going to saw the army that saw victory first already had a means to win and did not just rush in without a plan.
