When I was drawing hyperflannel.deviantart.com/ar… the other day, I managed to remember this one book I read in fourth grade called The Classroom at the End of the Hall, which was sort of like a dollar store-brand version of Wayside, essentially the same premise of a seemingly normal school that's actually got things weird about it, such as a genie made of chalk dust, or a monster that hides in your messy desk. The one story in the book that I remember most fondly though was one about a kid who really hated art class because he was bad at drawing. One day a substitute art teacher comes in wearing a trench coat and says that the class is going to draw her. The kid frets about this because he especially can't draw people, only for the teacher to take off her trench coat to reveal that she's a stick figure. Not only is she easy to draw, but the kid notices that even when he doesn't draw her accurately, when he looks up, she now looks exactly as he drew her, so even if he drew her wrong, he still drew her right. Looking back at that story, it actually has kind of a beautiful message about how your art doesn't need to be perfect and especially doesn't need to perfectly resemble the subject, just do what you want and do it how you want to do it, a message more artists should take to heart and then get beaten out of them when they get to college because art professors hate that shit. They think you're not a true artist if art isn't making you miserable. Also, you're not a true artist if you convey any subject that isn't bowls of fruit. I never thought when I went to college that I would come out of it hating fruit of all possible things. Either way, I always wondered even back when I was a kid, if this teacher who changes shape depending on how she's drawn ever had a wiseass student draw a pair of boobs on her.
