He’d been convinced he would go and find the family’s fortune, based on stupid rumors some tourist had spouted passing through. Galun was foolish enough to believe them, based on a map the person had traded him. Of course the family had been against the venture, despite really needing some money, but he just had to go and sneak out one night anyway.
As the eldest, Shida had gone to track him down.
Neither of them had expected the sudden sandstorm
She’d managed to shove Galun back in the direction of their tents, but that was all. She had grabbed his backpack while arguing with him to make her point, and then it was the only thing she could hang on to while the desert whirled around her.
When the storm died down and she could breathe again, she was in the Chimera Desert. Alone.
