Don't worry, I use 3dmax for years now, and texturing is still my weak point Sometimes it's almost a question of luck to have nice texturing- sometimes images made "the proper way" look worse or less realistic then those made for fun. If you are not going into engineering then 3d is not for always doing it proper ways, it has to look good- just take some time and play around- you will see some nice effects soon
