Description
It starts more simply than a kiss, with talk and touch and time.
And though I dared contain it thus,
it does not fit in rhyme.
The quark of love hides in all play,
and wit a favored mask.
It needs not be intentional,
love needs no leave to ask.
Though still a man of jaded years,
I want no more to waste.
So if I’m held in high regard,
towards love let’s not make haste.
Let us proceed with timid step
across each other’s hearts,
Too deep a tread, too quickly made
may push us both apart.
Do not forsake your smile, O love,
I’ll not give up my grin,
I merely hope my words ensure
caution is there within.
Imperfect man, no better found,
I am, thou yours, would be.
And you, my dear, accustomed to
a life of luxury.
But here I have forgot my point
and strayed too far ahead.
The night is young before us, but
my mind has gone to bed.
I know this world is fleeting and
you’re right, it goes too fast.
Yet by a slow affection may we
show faith our love will last.
