Description
After making my first set of Fimo teeth for a possible Viral costume I may make in the future I thought I would put together a tutorial for anyone else looking to try their hand at it.*EDIT*
commented below with a tip that may come in handy if the color ends up unnaturally white.
"i have a little tip for anyone reading this, to give your teeth that realistic look ad a tiny (AND I MEAN TINY) amount of tan clay, yellow, and an even smaller amount of black, it looks really good, i have tried something similair to this where i made single teeth and matched them to my teeth shade..."

Can you use regular clay for this, or would that be a foolish idea?

I apologize but, I really can't give a good answer on this since each clay has its own chemical composition and may or may not react well to the same process.

This tutorial seems good but I think I did something wrong at step 11.. I'm probably gonna sound stupid but I used the base as a mould for sculpting the new teeth but the new teeth didn't come out in one clean piece and it ruined the base so i threw it all out. I'm not giving up yet so I'll attempt this again but is there any advice you can give so that I don't fail at this again?
Thank you~~

If I'm reading your question correctly it sounds like you did do it correctly. One of the issues you may be having is once you bake it the second time it'll usually adhere too well to the original base piece to come off if you make a mistake. Also if you're grip is too tight on the original piece it could warp the shape and throw your fit off.
In what way did it ruin your base? Is it a problem of it fitting over your real teeth or is it a different issue? Also there are 2 things about this, you do want to try to stay as thin as possible without being too thin to keep shape (something that can easily be a challenge) and also once fimo is completely hardened you can actually cut and shape them using an xacto knife and sandpaper. Just make sure if you do use sandpaper to sand it as smooth as possible and clean it thoroughly before using, I have a cheap toothbrush I used to scrub my first set. It may be considered a children's toy in Europe but you still want to avoid ingesting any of the clay.

You said these were for short term use? Do you know of anyway to make them last about a day?

They do last, but it's not recommended you wear them for a long time. You could try, though.

Sculpey is possible, but I haven't tried it myself. It seems a bit too toxic, though.

I found a great video that is a tutorial for Grell teeth!
If you don't have any Plasticine though, just use modeling clay, and instead of using wax, use plaster of paris. I hope this helped!

I'm making some of my own, and decided to suggest that maybe make the teeth not as straight and such, maybe add a few nicks in them, helps make them seem more real. C:

but what about speaking with these dudes?

Ah, don't worry about the lisp. I've made two of these before, an i've had a lisp with both of them. It's because the fact that the spaces between our teeth are being covered up and when talking [without the fake teeth in] we can get an 's' sound, but talking with the fake teeth in, causes the lisp due to the fact that air isn't going through the spaces in our teeth. hope that helps you out :3

As I've found, nail polish actually makes the teeth a better color and gives them a bit of a shine. Of course, it tastes nasty, but so long as you don't press your tongue there too often it's all good.
May I ask, does it make speaking harder? My cosplay character has a bit of a lisp, so if it's slight that would be fine, but are they bulky? Another question, do they stay in place fairly well, or do you use denture stuff?

ZemKun In reply to VerificationRequired [2012-09-24 03:05:26 +0000 UTC]
If you don't want the teeth to be bulky and interfear with your speech I suggest using a file and stripping some of the clay down until it fits nicely in your mouth, I had a problem with my clay being too bulky at first but after Filing them down it made it easier to speak and didn't make me look like a monkey, I do warn you though if you file it too much you risk taking more clay than you want and then it becomes flimsy and could break in your mouth as invader Gir said. When you put the individual teeth on I would suggest filing those too but not a whole bunch because then they will look odd and funky.

invader-gir In reply to VerificationRequired [2012-04-26 00:25:00 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't have thought of nail polish, its an interesting idea but doesn't the heat and moisture of being in the mouth soften it?
Also it really depends on how thick you make them. I have a set that are on the thick side for Viral that give me a really bad lisp. Plus some people use their teeth more than others when forming words, a friend also had a really bad lisp while using a normal pair of fangs she bought but she managed to adjust to the point where it was gone after wearing them for a bit. If you decide to use them I would suggest practicing with them to see though like I said the intention of the tutorial is for fangs that aren't meant to be worn long.
For the adherence, the clay should be a direct negative of the shape its sitting over, with the moisture in your mouth sliding over the area should create a minor suction that should hold it in place temporarily. If you are looking for something a bit longer lasting I would more suggest buying an actual set of fangs which comes with an adhesive to keep them in place. Or if you're looking for something a bit more custom and don't mind spending some money you can buy a Custom fang kit here [link]

Wow this is definitely a lot cheaper than the dental alginate. Of course there is that debate about toxicity that I'm sure you've heard way too much about. I think I'm going to read the packages, do a little research, and maybe see if using plastic wrap as a barrier will work.

hydr0ph0en1x In reply to Umbreon-art [2012-04-22 22:07:40 +0000 UTC]
Well I did a bit more research, and really they just don't want you to ingest it before you bake it, because there is a chemical in it that burns away when it is baked that is toxic, but, as I said, it burned away. Also, I decided to coat the fake teeth I made with superglue. I know this isn't the preferred option, but I was only wearing them for one day, it was cheap, and really, all the sugar I ate that day was probably more hazardous to my health than the teeth were.

Haha yeah i highly doubt you would have any health problems if you just did this once and after baking I'm sure it's fine. I just wouldn't recommend putting non-baked polymer clay in your mouth a ton.

Telling naive people to poison themselves is NOT alright.
You aren't even supposed to let food touch anything that has touched the clay, so obviously it is NOT SAFE to put in your mouth.
Did you just skim over the warning?

stalkartist In reply to invader-gir [2012-03-05 03:08:48 +0000 UTC]
Do you not understand what this can do to people?
"While working with raw polymer clay, take care not to rub your eyes. Wash your hands frequently and especially before eating. Tools and equipment (toaster ovens, food processors, pasta machines, knives, etc.) that come into contact with raw polymer clay must never be used to prepare food afterward, and baked clay items should not be used to prepare or serve food, either."
This is NOT SAFE, and I don't care if you couldn't read the warning.

invader-gir In reply to stalkartist [2012-03-05 03:15:16 +0000 UTC]
Alright, you want a response, here it is.
Fimo is sold in Europe with the SAME EXACT formula as in the US until the title of "children's toy". One of the tests all children toys need to pass is a toxicity level when consumed knowing children are likely to put it in their mouths/eat it.
I will not be removing the deviation because my opinion differs from your own. If this is something you are not agreeable then that is your problem. Other than that I don't know what else to tell you since its obvious you haven't been bothered to actually read through previous comments where it was also covered.

Vampire-dreams In reply to invader-gir [2012-03-22 05:24:20 +0000 UTC]
Ummm just reading through this discussion. I think Invader-gir is mostly right. Most polymer clays have to pass a test in toxicity levels. I mean we spend hours of time working it with our hands so our skin is in contact with the raw material. So the material itself isn't poisonous.
However, it's not food safe due to the fact that clay is porous material. Think of it as a sponge. Even though it's washed, water and bacteria can be absorbed by it and then populate in there to a level that may make you ill. That's why there are food safe glazes for ceramic clay as it's also porous and requires a sealant.
I have yet to find any food safe sealants for polymer clay though. But I'm under the assumption that if you want to use it as cosplay/costume teeth, that you might want to consider giving it a shelf life of so many times to be used so as to avoid getting ill.
I hope this information wasn't unwanted, or cause any arguments. We all just want to be safe when we create things for people to use.
