Oh my god! That question may or may not have been asked by me... >.>
I'll admit my head canon involves the two of them being very 'intimate' to an almost ridiculous degree. Though it's mostly for a fun rp, where you're is a story your putting time an effort into. Though we've planned that Darkleer and Ruinseek (my name for Aradiacestor, in case anyone else is reading this) are only going to spend about a sweep together, before she ends up leaving, and spending the rest of her life with Solluxcestor. While Darkleer just wants her to be happy even though he loves her. But they're relationship should always be tragic. Admittedly, the thing that first drew me to Darkleer was how sad and pathetic he looked, and the whole potential 'love martyr' thing.
In the rp, Darkleer has learned to control his strength, but after Ruinseek leaves, it sort of emotionally breaks him, so he loses most of that control. Though I really like you're head canon about him being able to control himself, but not trusting himself. It's so sad. Damn it, Darkleer, such a big powerful guy shouldn't be so sad and precious.
Ebonveil is such a naughty girl, I love how you characterize her~

I knew it. But seriously, best question.
Aww, that's a sweet headcanon you have! It makes a lot of sense. The way I set mine up just opened a good basis for a longer amount of time together. More time to fall in Stockholm. (I have considered bringing in Solluxcestor, and I still might. I have ideas. I just don't want it to appear as a Darkleer vs Solluxcestor thing, because I hate stories where boys fight over a girl. It's not really in character for them to fight anyway.) But I like your version, of him just letting her go. It has just the right amount of bittersweet poignancy. And emotional breakage, the poor guy. It's a good story ;_;
Oh, Darkleer. You will forever be plagued by fangirls who give you the greatest happiness, only to snatch it away again.
And, much like Hussie with Kanaya, I am an Aries and refuse to be associated with a lame useless damsel in distress of a troll. Therefore she will kick ass and be sassy and confident and use the situation to her advantage. <3

Darkleer is just way to fun to torture. Part of my wants to see him happy, while another part love seeing him sad and mopey. I event want the rp to end with Ruinseek visiting Darkleer using astral projection. She'd visit him each sweep and he'd watch as she grew older and older, until she finally stopped visiting. I feel like such a horrible person. Though in my head canon, Marlclaw is still alive, and they're both happy being each others moirails. So, he's a little better off in that aspect.
It would be cool to see your interpretation of Solluxcestor. Maybe he could have been one of the many people killed in the uprising. He could have been Ebonveil's matesprite, though maybe that wouldn't fit in with the story. She would probably be much more angry if that were the case. It's so cool of you to listen to other peoples head canon. In the last fandom I was in people where so rude when it came to stuff like this. It was so awful.
Oh yes! *high fives fellow Aries* and your one of the cool ones who want Aradia/her ancestor to be bad ass and awesome. I've seen too many Aradia fans who turn her into a tragic damsel who's being abused by Equius and needs to be saved by broody Sollux. Also, ditto on the guys fighting over the girl thing. It's been over done so many times I don't want to see it if possible.

I like hearing what other people think about the ancestors! Or anything, really. There are lots of really good ideas, and more often than not, others will think of things that I haven't even considered. And also because my headcanon completely annihilated any chance Darkleer had of being happy, and I like to see that others at least have him being happy somewhere, somehow.
I blame Marlclaw for his unhappiness, actually! I started off by wondering where Nepeta's attraction to Karkat stemmed from (outside of the "kat" in his name), and decided that clearly ancestors were the answer to this mystery - which is why I have her and Sufferer matespritted. And because of that, she joins the uprising and is consequently culled, and Darkleer goes without a proper moirail for pretty much the rest of his life. Mindfang is his substitute moirail, but she is awful at it, and neither of them would ever, ever acknowledge it how dare you for even suggesting such a thing. (I deduced this by how utterly miserable Darkleer looked in the comic, and how Mindfang actively pacified his whining by giving him things to do. Worst moirails in the galaxy, but it made so much sense to me.)
So far, my idea for Sollux's ancestor is that he and Aradia's ancestor were moirails from when she was young. He's older, so they have to part ways when he joins the Imperial Legion. They may meet a good deal later, post-prostheses, with him still as a Legion soldier (trolls don't ever really leave the military, I think; their culture's pretty centered on it). From there, I'm trying to decide which course of action to take; either she stays with Darkleer, or he insists she go with Viraleye. It may be both; he insists, and she stays anyway. Either way, everyone will be super adult about it, because these dudes are far too logical to fight over a chick who can make decisions on her own (and won't abide them being made for her). So don't you worry about that! I would be horrified with myself if I allowed this story to devolve into that kind of cliched conflict.
*high five!* Aradia's the least likely to take shit from anyone, much less from a sweaty racist. I mean, despite the whole fatalist attitude, she's still got a lot of fight in her. Pretty sure if Sollux and Equius started fighting over Aradia, she would just get bored and wander off to, I dunno, look for fossils on the moon.
That's pretty much what I want to see in the comic. She just goes, "Nah, I don't need quadrants to be happy," and then flies off to enjoy godhood and have awesome adventures in space. That... that would make me so happy.
oh my god look at all those words I just typed D:

All I could think of while drawing this was Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex. I read that essay a long time ago, and it was the first thing I thought of when Homestuck introduced me to Equius, and again with Darkleer. It... it is always in the back of my mind.
I'm mostly leaving it up to readers to decide for themselves whether or not she is lying just to annoy him.
Although I already have an answer in mind. Because I just can't ignore that essay.

phrenotobe In reply to invalidgriffin [2011-07-16 04:37:04 +0000 UTC]
I know the essay is quite convincing, but I'd err on the side of skepticism. (besides which, most of the images you drew have her touching him, which doesn't aid me in thinking of this as a platonic relationship at all because I am a horrible person and keep believing she'd make the first move.)
(feel free to ignore me from here, I'm going to explain why I think this can work.)
The problem I have is that Equius and Superman both have varying inconsistancies in the way their strength is displayed. Equius bruises his Lusus, but also has the finesse to fit both Vriska and Tavros with a robotic prosthetic - if you think about that a moment, that means he can hold back his strength long enough to not injure them any more than he needs to, to connect it - unless trolls are naturally the strongest/hardiest race on the planet and can't be easily hurt like that, there's an inconsistancy there.
Another point I need to raise is that Equius, at six sweeps, is probably still growing and doesn't always know his own strength. Darkleer as you show him is much older, a full adult, and despite the size difference, has probably got greater self-control than Equius. Bringing in Superman in for a moment, because Clark has grown up always stronger than everybody else, he quite quickly had to learn how to reign in that strength around people, or they'd get hurt incredibly easily. Since he was 'raised human' and lives to a strict moral code, he doesn't end up being lazy about it, because it's a constant thing to have to do.
Equius could quite possibly have trouble because most of the time he's interacting with other trolls in a society that champions toughness and violence, and learning to control his power is merely something he wants to do to get better at things he likes - connecting wires is probably quite hard when you keep breaking the instruments you're using to connect them and Robotics can be quite a delicate art.
And for a final follow-up, I'll just mention - My friend is small, but wiry and very strong due to a lifetime of martial arts. she broke a glass quite by accident by putting it down too harshly. it shattered pretty much A La Equius. She didn't realize her strength would let that happen, and it illustrates what happens when you don't keep yourself under adaquate control.
Um, if you've read through that, first I want to say thanks and second I want to say you ideas are just as valid if not more so.

I read it, and you have good points! They are points I have also considered, and I do agree. But, I don't think I've ever stated the relationship was platonic? In fact, with everything I've drawn, it's quite the opposite, and I will readily admit to that. The difference is in where I believe the line is drawn. Nonsexual does not automatically mean not-matesprits! And it also does not disperse apparent sexual tension, because let's be honest, there is a lot of it and it's intentional. I am a terrible person that way. These are important points to remember.
I think Darkleer has a great deal of self-control, developed more thoroughly in areas where Equius is still learning. I agree that he is probably perfectly capable of a STRONG degree of tenderness. I actually imagine him working with ceramic casings rather than metal; ceramic is a great deal more delicate (with the main benefit being that it weighs less than metal), and requires more care to craft.
That said, the main reason I stated pails were not involved was due to my particular characterization of Darkleer. He is quite STRONG indeed, and confident in his STRENGTH, but various influences cause him to fear he does not have the requisite self-control to pursue bucket-filling intimacies. She pushes (because yeah, she would totally make the first move), and he denies. It is his belief rather than his actually being incapable of gentleness that is the hindering factor. The relationship must then work around this, which is why I have stated it becomes like a guardian relationship. Albeit a twisted one (which is to say, non-platonic; because it needs to have that slight creepy flavor to it to make it complete).
So um, yes! You are correct, and I just thought I'd clarify. Because I think about this too much. ._.

phrenotobe In reply to invalidgriffin [2011-07-16 07:52:12 +0000 UTC]
Thanks ever so much for explaining how you see this relationship. (it is brilliant that you think about it deeply rather than just making everything pretty and nice.)
The tension is definitely there, and it's part of why I adore it and everything you say makes sense. I just considered your reasons against it may lie in his strength, not his own self-perception, and now you explained it that way, I can see precisely that this is the way you said it is. Not that I'm flip-flopping over my own opinion - just that like an egderp I seemed to miss the vital point that lies at the crux of this argument for 'no pails'.
(and 'Platonic' is really the the wrong word I was looking for, and I'm sorry, but I need to go spend a lot more time on Dictionary.Com and Wikitionary before I can find a proper word for 'mutual non-sexual romantic relationship with elements of cradlesnatching and stockholm syndrome'. curse my attempt to be concise in what turned out to be an essay. .__. )

I'm seriously realizing how creepily this couple would work;
Darkleer/Equius just LOVE being "controlled" by low bloods [due to the SCANDAL!] and Aradiacestor/Aradia would always have to take control of the situation, since he would accidentally hurt her otherwise, so it all just kinds fits.
AND I'M SO RAMBLING BUT THIS IS SO CUTE.
