Description
Jaime and Robyn sat in the kitchen, eating breakfast, and talking about their plans for the day.“What do you think about taking Kunik on exploration?” Jaime asked.
“I do not think she's ready to let an unknown human ride her just yet. One more hunt should do the trick though.” Robyn replied.
“What about Baby Doll, you think she is ready to be ridden?”
“It would be good to keep her a bit more restrained, her curiosity is a good thing when it comes to us and our tokotas, but we don't want another incident.”
“You are telling me! It takes far too many tomato juice cans to get a yeti clean” Jaime grimaced, his nose wrinkling. “You think she's ready to be ridden by one of us?”
“I think she would have been ready last time, and that's not a bad idea. That would help keep her under control. Though hopefully she's learned her lesson now.”
“Who do we want to take with us?”
“Us? Who said anything about you going?”
“I figured you'd want someone to ride Baby Doll while you and Zavala kept watch from the back of the pack as per usual.”
Robyn smiled “As long as you promise you won't play any tricks.”
Jaime grinned innocently “When have I ever pulled a trick on you?”
Rolling her eyes Robyn did not deign to respond to the question.
“Alright, fine” Jaime held his hands up in the air, putting on an offended air “I do not know what gave you the idea I'm the kind of guy, but if it will make you feel better I will promise to play no tricks while we are on the hunt.”
“Well, we are obviously taking Baby Doll, Kunik and Zavala. I am just not sure whether we should switch up the other two part members so Kunik gets used to more tokotas, or keep the same ones so that she can get comfortable with them and us.”
“You took Willow and Song last time right?”
Robyn nodded. “They seemed to work pretty well together when it came to killing the bear.”
“Let's bring them along again then, I think Song is probably going to help win over Kunik if nothing else, and Willow needs more hunts to her name.”
“Sounds like a plan. Will you be ready to go after this?”
“Sure.”
They ate in silence after that, the only sound were the metal spoons tapping the sides of the plastic bowls. Soon they had finished their meals and they packed together, not taking much as they did not plan on it being a long hunt and then they tacked up their tokotas.
Zavala stood patiently still as Robyn mounted her, while Baby Doll pranced in place, and Jaime patted the yeti, whispering calming words to the young tokota.
Kunik, sticking close to a familiar face was already by their side as they left the barn, the slate roan was sometimes like a shadow with how she moved, though not so much out of sneakiness but rather a shyness around strange people and tokotas. They soon found Willow and Song playing together and Zavala called to the two gray females and they quickly joined the group, tails wagging.
“We are going on another hunt today girls, ready to find some prey?” Zavala spoke to all of others, taking charge as per usual.
A chorus of yeses came from the young females and soon they were off hunting for prey. “What do you think we will find today?” Baby Doll asked eagerly.
“Hopefully not another skunk” Willow teased, “I certainly do not want to be given a tomato bath” the barred yeti wrinkled her nose.
Baby Doll looked down, briefly, though tokotas could not blush she still seemed embarrassed by the fact that during the last hunt she had bound head first into a bush without any thought of what could be on the other side, only to get herself sprayed by a skunk, scolded by Zavala and then washed several times by Jaime and Robyn.
It took the five of them longer to find a scent this time, though there were rabbits and squirrels that distracted them briefly they were looking for larger prey that they would have had a harder time taking down alone.
Kunik was the one to first scent the deer, and a panic rose in her throat for a moment at the thought of speaking to the others, she closed her eyes and counted down from ten, and when she spoke, though her voice was soft and shaky it instantly got everyone's attention.
“There are deer ahead, it smells like at least five of them.”
Zavala, pleased with the shy tokota, nuzzled the roan proudly. “Okay everyone, deer tend to be more flighty then bears so try to be as quiet as you can, we do not want one of you startling them until we are ready. Be careful approaching them, it is rutting season and if there are any males they are likely to be sparring, and we do not want any tails broken or paws stepped on if we can help it.”
With that the five tokotas split up slightly, Zavala going with Kunik and Song while Kendrick took Baby Doll and Willow another way.
They continued searching for the deer, the forest petering out into a wide, open meadow and they paused again. If the deer were out here it meant the skittish animals would be able to see them coming, but it also meant they would have to dodge trees when chasing down the prey, and they split up even further to get a better look around.
Quail flew up into the sky in front of Kunik's nose, causing the roan to stumble, and halt in her tracks for a moment, watching the birds send a warning to anything that might be nearby to run. Zavala was quick to give the young tokota a reassuring glance.
The flurry of the quail was accompanied by a movement further south in the meadow of several brown flashes darting away, the deer had seen tokotas and fled. Deer were fleet of foot, and had excellent stamina in comparison to their last prey, a bear. Chasing them would be a true challenge to test the young tokotas, but Zavala believed they were ready.
Howling loudly she called for Willow and Baby Doll, and with Jaime and Kendrick hanging on tightly the tokotas were off at a sprint chasing after the deer.
In a clever move the deer had headed back into the dense forest, slowing the tokotas progress as they followed the cloven hoof-prints left behind only minutes before. The tokotas fur was quickly entangled with leaves and twigs, their paws grass and mud-stained, the yetis especially so.
Zavala was about to call the group to a halt, no use wasting their energy when she spotted a deer up ahead that was lagging behind the others. She recognized it as a young male, why he was dropping behind she could not tell, but it gave her and the others the energy to surge onward.
This time they would not have the benefit of planning their attack, they would have to rely on their instincts to take the deer down while avoiding its hooves and antlers. They grew closer and closer to the young buck, now Zavala could see why he had slowed. There were marks she recognized as antler, deer teeth and a cut in the leg that looked like it was from a deer's hoof – the buck had been sparring and from the looks of it he had been the losing party.
Quickly the five tokotas overtook the buck, Willow and Kunik biting his back legs hard, causing him to stumble while Song bit into the neck, shaking it between her teeth until there was an audible snap.
Panting the tokotas stood over the carcass, the forest growing quiet around them, and they howled, briefly, but triumphantly in unison. Jaime and Robyn joined in, human and tokota songs mixed together in a strange, yet melodic fashion, their voices filling the forest in harmony.
