Description
The sun was starting to set, horses were milling about, some still saddled, some being groomed, others grazing peacefully Whinnies and snorts were heard, it was not quiet here that was for sure with so many gathered here for the night. Tomorrow would likely bring the bridge crossing, and Robyn wondered how those with horses more prone to spook would handle that challenge. She also wondered if everyone would be able to get across in a quick and organized manner, so far organization hadn't been an issue, sure it was crowded but for the most part those with challenging mounts had stayed a decent way away from other unfamiliar horses and other riders had been more than happy to give those people the room they needed. So far it had been a very dusty, very dirt filled trip and Robyn was happy for the bandanna she had tied around her nose along with the water she was sure to drink lots of, making sure Petri had plenty of the same. Robyn's bones as she set up camp for the night, and she groaned as she thought of the chore that was setting up the tent again. It could wait for later tonight she decided tiredly leaving it laying on the ground and turning to look at her mare.
Petri's coat was covered in dust, the hair around her fetlocks had little clumps of dirt in them, her tail was tangled and her blue eyes didn't sparkle the way they normally would. "I'm sorry girl, I guess I haven't been taking very good care of you huh?" Petri nickered softly and Robyn dug in the bag to find a carrot, granted it was dry and a bit wilted but Petri's ears still flicked forward and she leaned toward Robyn eagerly. Robyn rubbed Petri's neck gently as the mare munched on the carrot letting herself relax for a bit, a new energy filled her and she gathered the grooming supplies with determination. She would make this mare sparkle.
Robyn sighed as she carefully ran a comb through Petri's tangled black and white tail, she still was not quite sure why she was going to all of this trouble when tomorrow the pale mare would be dirty and her hair would once again be tangled. But as she stepped she felt a wave of satisfaction. Petri's eyes shone with happiness at being clean for one and her coat gleamed in the twilight. "Feel better girl?" Robyn whispered to the mare, Petri nickered and bobbed her head. "That's my good girl." Stretching Robyn put the brushes and combs away into the bags and looked around. During their last few days here they had met up with more people and Nordanners than she could have ever imagined including a rider named Alfred and his panda mare Candle and his companions, a woman whose name was also Robyn and her temperamental stallion Rise. She had spoken with Alfred a bit about what the new world, in the end she hoped it would be as Alfred had said “Something wonderful, I’ll bet."
Suddenly Petri reared up, and sharp whinnies echoed throughout the camp, the sound of horses in panic everywhere. "Whoa easy girl!" Robyn said trying to keep calm even though everything in her wanted to run. The earth began to shake and Robyn fell to the ground her hat flying off of her head as she stumbled. The rumbling seemed to last forever and yet was over in a moment. Before the dust had settled Robyn scrambled to her feet to check over Petri, the mare was snorting and prancing in place but at least she had not pulled her lead rope and stake out of the ground. "Shhhh girl it will be alright" Robyn whispered as she stroked the mare's now sweaty neck. After Petri had calmed down some Robyn surveyed the damage, some horses were still loose or spooked, others were already saddling their mounts. She looked in the direction of the bridge and gasped, the earth had been torn open, from here she couldn't see exactly how big it was but she could see Nordanners and their riders on the other side. Hopefully no one had gotten hurt, and she looked back at her mare hugging the horse a bit before turning to gather her things, picking up her hat and dusting it off before donning it and pulling the brim down. Well, at least she hadn't set up the tent.
