Steam clouded the sky, and the air became humid. Kendrick could feel his hair becoming plastered to his head, and his shirt quickly grew damp from both his sweat and the water around them. They had defiantely reached the hot springs. Why just a week ago when it had been freezing he would have enjoyed this a lot more, but with spring’s warmer weather, while it wasn’t overly hot, it was not exactly comfortable either.

A cluck from the chicken distracted him for a moment and he looked back at Rif, the vit who had insisted they bring the barn animal along with them. Somehow Rif had managed to position the chicken so it rested comfortably on her back and Kendrick had to say that it was the most mild tempered chicken he had ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Ki’s soft whine drew his attention back to the golden colored male. “Stop whining, you big baby” Kendrick chided softly. “Aren’t you having fun? Being out and about, hmm? Well, you had better just be grateful you are being ridden, that means you don’t have to be as social, ey.”

“Smell anything yet Tocino?” Kendrick turned to the half mane van gogh who was sniffing about, stepping delicately around the most steamy areas. “What about you Fenris, any of yours found anything?”

~Zandromina
Fenris was amusing himself by picturing the chicken in a few different types of clothing; a tiny white bird riding a great big wolf-dog. That would make a story to tell Guardian certainly, and he would get the greatest laugh about it. If only he had thumbs to take a picture… The maned wolf was pulled out of his musings by Kendrick, and to answer his question the wolf turned to his charges in turn to ask them the same. Rizika came up with nothing, unsurprising being that he had one of the weakest noses in Silver Hollow’s ‘chapter’ of Sosin. Bendah seemed to be onto something, though with any luck, or lack thereof, it’d be another animal for Rif to baby over. Fenris didn’t mind the chicken, but it made him hungry and piteous all at the same time.

Red seemed to perhaps be onto a trail of something, but he would not hint as to what it was, even with asked with a sharp bark. Fenris may be his handler, but he was not the wolf dog’s leader, and not always would he answer to the call of a lesser. Rizika seemed to sense that and sent a nice little reminder back about what happened the last time Red’s pride got in the way of a handler’s question; it was not pleasant. He resigned to answer the maned wolf’s question with a sigh, generally stating that he sniffed some sort of eggs, though he wasn’t sure what kind or exactly where. He was allowed to lead the way, with Rizika letting Rif, Ki, and Tocino know what was going on. Fenris nodded to Kendrick in turn and followed the Beta down a much too warm spring path.

The water was almost boiling in the springs, not quite too hot to sit in comfortably but also just too hot for delicate paws. The orange maned wolf was not pleased to find out that his wolves were leading him straight down the center of the hottest springs and decided right there that he could safely follow on the ridge and still keep a watchful eye on everyone. He let all the Tokotas know, and then proceeded to run as fast as possible away from the hot water. Kendrick eyed him suspiciously as he didn’t want to be in charge of Tokotas he did not know, let alone of a pack that wasn’t his in the first place. Once he saw that Fenris was still keeping pace with everyone though, he figured it was just too hot for him and continued without issue or complaint. He’d probably do the same thing if he could.

Tocino was not afraid of a little hot water, no, the half mane, with as little fur as he had, welcomed the change and dove right in, splashing around, his fur quickly becoming soaked, and his mane matted down. He looked up at the others, panting, with a grin on his lips, wagging his tail and splashing some more.

With a word from Kendrick the half mane was reminded that they had a mission, and that now was not the time for fun and games. Reluctantly Rif edged closer though the vit refused to get in the water, probably afraid her chicken would get wet. Ki was content to stand to the side, and there at least Kendrick was safe from all the splashing water the tokotas submerging themselves caused.

Padding around the side of the spring Rif nosed the damp mud, and was unexpectedly successful in finding a very small, very muddy, but very clearly hidden easter egg that was blue and white striped. She carefully walked over to Kendrick, keeping to the drier patches of land as much as she could and dropped it into his hand. “Good girl” Kendrick praised, stroking her mane, wishing he brought along a towel. Now there would be the smell of wet tokota all the way home.

Ki tensed as Rif got closer, and danced on his feet, and when Kendrick reached out to take the egg from the vit that was just the distraction the golden male had been waiting for. He sidestepped, shying away from the other tokota, backing away, reaching his mouth down to grab at the loose reins. With a sharp tug the golden tokota was no longer reigned in, now while he never had wanted to hurt Kendrick the submissive tokota had had just about enough. He rolled to the side slightly, trying to gently deposit his rider, and in his surprise Kendrick fell right off on to his ass into the wet warm mud. Ki darted away instantly, reins trailing as he quickly disappeared into the steam.

Rizika heard everything first and let out what could’ve been a bray of alarm, with Bendah and Red following very shortly after. Fenris had never heard this sound from his pack before and quickly turned around to find out what in the world was going on. The surprise on his face when he beheld that Ki had kicked off his rider and disappeared was insurmountable. The maned wolf took just a moment to take in the spectacle before he bolted down the ridge to the Tokotas, attempting to calm both his pack and a panicking Rif. Tocino seemed to be fine enough as it was, so he was the least of Fenris’s concerns for the moment. After finding out exactly what happened, and making sure that Kendrick was okay (if not more than a little wet), he barked at Rizika to come and be the handler’s mount. There was no way a human would be able to keep up with five wolf dogs and a maned wolf when they were going to be heavily chasing another Tokota. Rizika did as asked and kneeled for Kendrick to mount up. There would be no reins or stirrups, but in this case he only needed to hang on.

Red knew what he had to do without being asked and took the lead, sniffing out the golden wolf’s trail through the water. Admittedly, it wasn’t easy, and the red Tokota had a difficult time starting out, but once he found it Red was very heavy on the hunt. Fen followed right behind with Rizika and Kendrick, Bendah, Rif, and then Tocino heading up the rear.

Shaking off the shock of being thrown off his tokota Kendrick checked his limbs for any major damage, though the fall had been onto soft ground you could never be too careful. Relieved to find nothing but some bruises that, while painful would heal he turned his attention to catching Ki.

Rif had freaked out over Ki dumping him and was trying to nuzzle him, her caring instincts kicking into high gear, she was even shaking the poor thing, and the chicken squawked unhappily. He whispered to the vit, soothing her, telling her he was fine, just to look after her chicken, but it meant he was likely going to be unable to ride her. Tocino was soaking wet and he would be in danger of again falling off if he tried to ride on the tokota’s slippery back.

So Kendrick was very grateful when Fenris had Rizika come up to him and offered him a ride. “Thanks” he nodded.

Once he had gotten settled on the strange tokota’s back and he had gotten some rope out of his pack to capture Ki with they headed in the direction Ki had gone. Hopefully the bull-headed male hadn’t gone far.  Rif followed obediently, just happy her human was safe, and Tocino, upon a given cue started to follow Ki’s trail.

They weaved their way through the springs, the steam stinging Kendrick’s eyes as he stared at every shadow in the mist that could possibly be a tokota. It was slow going, but that was probably for the better, this way it would be hard to miss the golden tokota. “Let me know if the rest of your pack spots anything. And hey, thanks again for helping me look for him. Robyn would have my hide if I lost that son of a binch.”

~Zandromina
A chirp was Kendrick’s acknowledgement as they continued through the mists and ponds, Red leading everyone this way and that in order to find Ki. He was a slippery one, no pun intended; it seemed like hours before the Beta found a steady trail to follow. Fenris felt fairly bad about the entire thing, truth be told. They’d been hunting eggs for two days and had only found one, Bendah nearly got stuck in a tree and now Ki had gone gallivanting off on his own because he was tired of this whole charade. He wondered if the golden Tokota would’ve run off had he still been with the group, instead of up on the ridge. The only plus side so far was that Rif made a new friend that hopefully would still be there for her to care for when they got back to Sosin. Fen shook off the thoughts and focused solely on Red, counting on him to find some trace of the missing wolf dog. It was very surprising when Rizika charged forward ahead with Kendrick, obviously having picked up some trace that the Beta had not found yet. At this point the sun was beginning to set, so they had to find Ki fast and then get home even faster with their one egg and one chicken.

Tocino and Rif charged after Rizika, resolute not to let their handler out of their site on a strange Tokota, with Bendah and Red close on their heels. Fenris loped on as fast as he could manage in order to keep up, but they were much larger than he, and had much more stamina to spare on such a long hunt. Letting the others go on, he decided just to follow their scent now that they were mostly out of the water. It wouldn’t be hard to find five very sweaty wolf dogs anyway. Unknowingly leaving their handler behind, Rizika and Red pushed on forward with each dash of their paws bringing new speed and covering more distance. Ki was close, and they could smell him a mile away now. With any luck he wouldn’t continue running off, but just sit and stare as Bendah determined he was want to do. That was, assuming of course, that he didn’t get into any trouble he couldn’t get himself out of easily.

It was much to Kendrick’s relief when suddenly Rizika started to speed up and it was obvious a moment later that Tocino had also caught the scent. Ki couldn’t be far now!

There! A flash of gold caught Kendrick’s attention, and his heart raced with hope. They burst out of the mist to see Ki lounging on a rock. The golden tokota’s head raised, and he started to rise to try and get away again. Kendrick gritted his teeth. “Oh no you don’t” he muttered and nudged Rizika with his heels The tokota obeyed, the others coming in from all sides to capture the tawny male. Tocino, Red, Rif, and Bendah all moved as if they had planned for this, coming in from different angles while Kendrick got his lasso up in the air. Ki had no chance, they bore down on him like a freight train, the lasso neatly landing around his neck. Kendrick let out a cheer, and was off Rizika’s back in a flash and tying Ki’s reins together and also using the rope as a makeshift bridle. Promptly Rif sat, and howled, happy to have her packmate back, Tocino joined her, his white fur glistening in the sunlight. Red and Bendah also howled, letting out a racket Fenris was sure to be able to find them by. Kendrick waited for the maned wolf to catch up and he dug the egg, which had somehow miraculously survived this whole ordeal and held it out to Fenris. “Here, I want you to have this. For all the help you have been. And now I think, before anything else happens, it’s time to head home.” With that Kendrick hopped back onto Ki’s back, Tocino and Rif flanking the golden tokota and they rode off into the sunset.
