Description
Season One - Spring through FallGolden Lane Stable's had passed in what seemed to be in a blink of an eye to Lucretia. It had been quiet with just three horses, combined with not wanting to wear the two year-olds out before their careers had even begun.
Again Ebony had shown her spirit, Lucy hadn't been able to hold the filly back in her first maiden, and Ebony was heaving for breath by the end of the short race, but had managed to hang on in third. After months of working with the filly, learning her movements, how to hold her in, they took another shot.
Ebony's hooves pounded on the dry track, neck stretched out. She had broken well out of the gate, her brown eyes gleamed as she took her preferred place in the front of the track. Fortunately with the short race Lucy didn't have to hold her back, and the filly took a commanding two length win.
With practice proving merit Lucretia had entered the filly against some of the other top two year old sprinters in one last race for the season, the Shakopee Juvenile, a short six furlong race.
Her black hide had glistened in the September sun, her blaze making her a distinct figure on the track. Lucy urged the filly out of the gate cleanly, and hadn't held her back, leaning forward, hands quiet, just letting the filly run. A question had been asked. Was she going to be faster?
She was.
-------
Theodore, or Ted as the jockey preferred to be called, had ridden Colored Tones to a narrow victory in his maiden, the colt had certainly had the drive, but nerves, as they always did on the young, took a toll.
Colored seemed to be favoring his right hind leg after his race, the colt had been rushed to the vet, and to some small relief had been diagnosed with only a splint. He would recover, but there would be no more races for him during his two year old career.
---------
As for Budgie, well, the colt had been fractious, breaking out of the gate poorly in his first maiden. They had tried to select a track that was going to be wet for the colt who seemed to love the mud splashing up against his legs, but the track had tried to an almost spongy texture. The colt had seemed un-nerved by it all, dancing across the track in almost dressage like move before Ted was able to get the colt to focus. He hadn't come in dead last, but the fifth place hadn't been what they had been looking for.
Another race was arranged, late in the year, hoping fall rains would be less fickle, giving the colt time to mature, and settle into his gangly body. The track was damp, a light sprinkle falling as they galloped, the pale colt had broken better, settled into his pace. Despite Ted's best effort, Budgie hadn't responded to the request for more speed as the stretch came into view. Still, things had gone better, with the colt taking a third place in his second maiden.
Lucretia had to make a decision for the colt. Would gelding him help his concentration? She watched his next few workouts closely, saw the way he flicked his ears back, saw how unaffected he was when Ted waved a whip in his face. No, gelding wasn't the answer. They just had to find the right motivation.
