Another sticker! This time of the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah.

Did you know that one of the big reasons modern cheetahs are threatened with extinction (other than human interference) is due to their lack of genetic variation? Cheetahs went almost extinct twice in the past in two bottleneck events they just barely managed to survive. However, the second bottleneck was only survived by about 7-10 closely related individuals.

All modern cheetahs descent from these few individuals, but due to the obvious inbreeding this involves, modern cheetahs have very low genetic diversity, even lower than some overbred dog breeds. This also in turn makes them more susceptible to things like infections and diseases.
