In the Two Towers, when Gollum is explaining how to get into Mordor via Cirith Ungol in the manner of someone trying to hit a word count on an essay , he talks about how he never went to "the Great Water that is never still", because he "never had a chance".

It kinda, sorta, maybe, sounds like he wishes he could see the ocean! Which I find a bit sad, because for one, it’s the barest little hint that Gollum might have some awareness that there’s a world out there he could have enjoyed if he hadn’t wasted his entire life on the Ring, and for another, I just love the ocean myself and the mere concept that someone could die a horrible death in a volcano without ever seeing the ocean makes me sad. Even if he was a jerk. So here’s a drawing of what Gollum might do if he got to visit the ocean, an AU drawing, because he never went to the ocean in canon, alas no.

He’s hiding somewhere in the dark eating a fish and muttering to himself. Gollum’s ambitions are small and pitiful, like himself. :’(
