Description Small pearls fell to the sand, all different shades of brilliant and bright colors. They all reflected the sunlight as they buried themselves in the earth. From water to rock, they all fell one by one, followed by the sounds of soft weeps and pitiful sniffles. An aimless adventurer walking by would believe they lucked out at the sight of dozens upon dozens of luxuries.

Her hair draped over her shoulders, a wet mop of sea water. Her hands collected some of the pearls that fell from her eyes before letting them sink back into the ground. The first time she experienced round and smooth pearls falling from her eyes she was only a child. Her tears had stopped immediately after seeing the rocks sink in the ocean, interest overthrowing her sorrow.

She scooted herself further into the water, the dry air becoming more and more uncomfortable on her tail.

She, (Name) (Last Name), would be known as what people would write off as a myth. What people would tell their children to put them to sleep. She was known as a Pearl Weeper. Nearly flawless features accompanied by not legs, but a tail that could only be made up in the imagination of a youth. Truly, it was magnificent. A beautiful array of light blue and lilac scales reflected the sun. The colors blended together perfectly from the top that started at her hips to the very tip which ended with two fins that looked as if they were made of silk.

She made sure to keep a bit of herself in the water. If she got any drier, the tail which was half of her pride would vanish and turn from instead two fins to two (Skin Color) legs. Very useless legs, admittedly, but still legs. They weren't used often as there was generally no reason for them to be, not to mention that to cherish legs was considered a disgrace to a mermaid.

Through the midst of her quiet sobbing, sounds of sand mounds being stepped on and incoherent muttering could be heard.

'Shit.'

Quickly, she shimmied back into the water as fast as she could. Her shoulders shivered at the sudden temperature change, but nothing too drastic. She stayed underwater at a both safe distance but close enough to see who was approaching.

A blurry but beautiful image came into view. Tan skin, long legs, curls flowing every which way down to his shoulders parted right in the middle. Certainly, this boy was prettier than some of the other humans she had encountered. The boy was wearing a, unzipped leather jacket with an army green shirt underneath. His pants had one too many zippers, but perhaps that was just another trend.

He didn't say anything as he bent down on one knee to inspect the pile of pearls by his feet. He picked up a small pearl out of dozens with a chocolate hue. He lowered himself until he was sitting on his knees. She definitely expected him to pocket every last one and sell them—it surely wasn't an unnatural occurrence. She never thought ill of those who sold them, though. It was only human that people expand their riches.

However, what did instead was pick them all up and plop them in his hand before throwing them out into the open sea. She watched as one of her tears sunk to the floor. (Name) watched as the curly haired man flung every single last pearl into the water. She inspected his face, expecting an expression of anger, but the only thing she saw was a face that looked at peace.

She attempted to not become overrun with curiosity as she forced herself to swim away from the man who had definitely sparked her interest.

Anthony. His name was Anthony! The boy who hadn't left her mind since three days ago was named Anthony. The girl recalled exactly a day ago when it happened.

"So is this where you sneak off to every day when you think no one notices?" This time the curly haired man was accompanied by another man. He was significantly taller than the one (Name) had grown fond of—broader too. His shoulders were wider and his biceps were more defined. However, the thing that stuck out most to her was his dark hair that poofed out in every which way. He was very attractive, to say the least, but for some reason she didn't get the same thrill that she had grown accustomed to when seeing him like she did when seeing Curly.

"Yeah, put a sock in it Diggs. Not like anyone gives a shit at that shithole they call a school." 'Diggs' crossed his arms. They were bare, as was the rest of his torso. "I never said they did. I'm just offended that you never invited me. You know how great this place would be to throw a party at?"

"I mean... I guess so. But I don't know, man. This is like the one place I can come to where someone isn't shoving a stick up my ass all the time."

"Man, whatever. Anthony, y'know, you gotta loosen up. I'm gonna tell Oak to come here Friday night, 'aight? We gonna get fucked up." The taller man wrapped an arm around Curly, whose name she just discovered was Anthony. Anthony looked a bit hesitant. "I mean... I guess so..."

"Yeah, that's more like it, huh? 'Aight, hold up, I'm gonna call Oak." Anthony nodded as a confirmation before staring into the water. (Name) tensed up, locking their gazes. He squinted his eyes. "Hey, Diggs, you see something?" As he turned his head, (Name) took the chance to swim away.

"Ow..." Her voice was soft and dainty as her feet touched a particularly hot rock. It only took a couple of minutes of laying out in the sun for her tail to dry out and shed just like a snake would. It would grow back almost immediately in the water, so it wasn't ever a problem. The real problem would be if someone from the sea caught her, but that was unlikely. Another problem was finding bottoms as she soon realized that humans came with a few extra parts than mermaids did, but that soon vanished as young women left clothes on the beach all the time. Partly because forgetfulness, but mostly because they were having too much 'fun' to even realize. A nice yet drafty skirt wasn't hard to find behind the infamous rock.

The girl spent a bit simply practicing walking in a line. It was definitely harder than it looked like, but once she had paced around for about forty five minutes it was like she had been walking her entire life. By an hour, she could skip. By two, it was dark and she was running laps up and down the beach. Albeit when she stopped there was a small ache, but nothing too drastic. It was enough to make her sit down on a rock that was an inch or two in water to gaze at her surroundings.

She had never realized it before now, but the land was actually a lot nicer than she had anticipated. The ocean was a lot prettier underwater, however the nice turquoise color on top was nice to look at. While she was accustomed to underwater roots, seaweed, driftwood, and from time to time coral, humans would be accustomed to gigantic trees and an array of colorful flowers.

The moon was definitely prettier from above the water. The stars were more visible than ever as well.

(Name's) peaceful thoughts were erased once a band of loud boys came running down with bags. One held a black metal looking box in his two hands with the happiest grin she had ever witnessed.

"Yo, get that stereo hooked up while I call up Rafa!" 'Diggs' as she had remembered him was definitely the loudest, although the man with the beanie came in a close second.

She recognized Anthony in the group of boys. His curly hair definitely separated him from the rest of the boys, but each one was definitely equally attractive.

"Hey, there's someone already here!" The man who had pointed you out was standing beside Anthony. His hair was almost black―even darker so in the dark. It was long on one side and shaved on the other, the longer side falling in his eyes.

"Jon, what are you―oh." Beanie looked at her as her shoulders tensed. The boys who were once loud and wild calmed for a moment to contemplate their options. "... Should we cancel?"

"We can't! There are already people heading down! Rafa said he's hauling!" Diggs whined as Beanie sent him a glare.

"Uh, sorry miss... You see, we planned a little gathering, so uh..."

Well damn. She couldn't leave! Where would she go? It wasn't like she could just hop back into the water and never come back up.

"Hey, why don't you join us?" Anthony offered her a smile. A heart stopping smile at that. As he came closer, she noticed small spots dotting each and every corner of his face. They were comparable to the stars above.

"Uh, sorry if that came off as creepy or somethin'..." He mumbled this when she didn't respond. She immediately popped back into her senses. "N-No! I mean... Uh, no, you're fine... I, um... Sure...?"

"Great! Alright, that's settled." Diggs began to proceed as he was previously, setting up a stereo system and a table full of food. He didn't seem to care one way or another, but she supposed that was understandable. There wasn't a point in ruining your plans for a stranger. Before long, people started crowding the beach. The scent of alcohol spread fast amongst the crowd. There were mostly seniors, but some juniors and sophomores here in there. There was also a small group of college students joining in, and no surprise, they brought more booze.

(Name) for one was never the best at socializing with new people―definitely not humans, at that. The way they acted differed from her kind, their simple movements being sharper and generally wilder. Perhaps it wouldn't be too hard to become accustomed to it, but her people just differed from humans so drastically. Mermaids were very calm and composed, rarely getting upset or lashing out. Unneeded violence was considered disgraceful towards them, but it seemed that two people getting into a playful fight wasn't anything unusual.

Anthony left for a moment, returning seconds later with a red cup in his hands. (Name) got off of the rock and reached out for it. She brought the cup to her nose and sniffed it, recoiling immediately after.

"Oh, do you not drink? Want me to get you something else?" The two had begun walking down the line of the beach, Anthony following her in her tracks. She looked at him with a puzzled expression. "Of course I drink..."

It took him only a moment to register the full meaning behind her words. "I meant do you not drink alcohol." He finished his sentence with an amused laugh.

"Oh! Sorry... I uh, I guess this is fine. Thank you," she mumbled as she brought the cup to her lips. She took a sip, nose scrunching up at the taste. It was bitter, but the way it made the back of her throat tingle was oddly satisfying. After a few sips the taste had adjusted itself to her taste buds and she could aimlessly sip without thinking about the smell that she still despised.

The music from the party had lowered its volume significantly as the two were ways down the beach at this point.

"So... You do you go to Park Vista High?" He gazed down at her―the stranger who he had felt he'd met before. Surely she didn't attend the same school at him. He would've remembered that face.

"No..." (Name) felt the tips of her cheekbones warm up ever so slightly, the small breeze doing absolutely nothing to cool them down.

"So then... Do you go to Heights High..?" He listed off a few nearby schools and to each one she shook her head. In her mind, she was rambling off excuses. 'I'm homeschooled', or, 'I go to a private academy'. Nothing seemed to fill the satisfaction of her lie, so her solution was to change the subject.

After Anthony had filled her in on a few of his friends, the duo walked back to the noise. Turns out that (Name) had a reason to be attracted him beyond his outside appearance.

It also turned out 'Diggs' is actually named Daveed, 'Beanie' is named Oak, and Mister 'Stop Digging Through the Chips' was Lin.

As the night grew shorter, the talks and the stares got longer. (Name) grew into the vibe of the party and the prim and proper attitude she held disappeared for just one night― A night to act like she could live in a different world. One night to remember.
